I was optimistic about this signing at the time and thought it was a reasonable deal on a day with a ton of horrible contracts (Lucic, Ladd, Erickson)
He did not work out at all here though and proved to be a really bad fit all around. I didn’t see a fit at all when putting the lines together. The team now has the cap space to lock Hanifin up long term hopefully $5.25M x 7 years

I wish it would have been possible just to eat one more year of the contract and buy him out after next season and only be on the hook for 2 seasons after that instead of 4 now.
But it looks like the Hanifin contract just won't make that possible. Still, it's concerning that we'll have a cap handicap for the next 4 years.

Cannot believe they actually did it, good on them. Hope Brouwer signs in Edmonton.

I hope it's less than 5M, considering that he has 4 RFA years remaining. I'll take the 7 years, though.

If Neal doesn't produce at the same clip he did in Vegas/Nashville. He'll be a prime target.
Backlund is another target if he can't rebound to his 15-20 goals.

Hey man he didn't work out here, but no need to punish him once he is off the team

Stajan, Brouwer, and Hamilton are all gone?
Somebody please tell me who I should think needs to be fired into the sun next season.
But in reality, although I would have managed the cap differently... I’m quite pleased by the turnover on the team after last season. Lots of guys with things to prove. Add in a new coach, hopefully a big culture change too

After the prospect polls are done, the next offseason poll should be "Next post game whipping boy". Top three candidates.
My guesses are Hamonic, Backlund, and Frolik.

Maybe just par for the course that your team is going to have $1 or $2 million of dead money against the cap every year but a quick perusal of capfriendly seems to show Flames have a bit more than most with $2.4 million next year.
|
Fair on Brouwer and Bouma but Murphy was the plan all along.

Taking a while to get to 5000

You just know we'll sign someone cringe worthy to a PTO that will have this whole board scared to death (that he will get a contract).
As for Brouwer it wouldn't shock me to see him end up back in Chicago.

Will always have to compare what Hanifin does to get the true measure. If he signed a bridge deal for 3 years and $3.3M and then exploded the Brouwer buy out will be cheap compared to years 4-7 on Hanifin's contract.
It's a gamble but one placed on the value of two players and not one.
Interesting situation.

That's incredibly hard to do for any team. To have each and every contract set at about what the player is worth, and some guys outperforming them. Don't think I've ever seen the Flames in such good shape when comparing cap hit vs value, since the day the cap was implemented.
Honestly the Flames are loooooong overdue for a big breakout season, and there's no reason it can't be this upcoming season when looking at the great value contracts on this team.

Neal, Frolik, Stone are likely a little on the high side for what we’ll get out of them next year. But I do agree - this is a nice roster

I think the 4th.
Murphy, Raymond, Bouma, Brouwer. If I recall, Murphy's buy-out was part of the Lack trade -- so it was expected, and not to be faulted.
The other 3?.. not so much.

My money is on Hamonic.
People still hold a grudge like a teenage girl on how we acquired him.

I don't know how realistic an option that is. Given the training camp dates in China this year the Flame will pretty well need a set roster clear out of the gates. And with all the players they have added this summer, this strikes me as something silly about which to worry.
