I sometimes forget that a lot of people don't actually read posts in sequence, and so fail to understand the context. Or they just suffer from reading comprehension problems in general.

Seems to be a theme in this thread.
Such as this:

Which wasn’t suggested. A stupid comment was made, but this was never suggested.

There is some speculation that the guy was an ISIL supporter. It's interesting because the media seems really convinced he was just crazy. Either way, it seems a little too quiet around the potential terrorism front. The Sun is on it though....

If you guys are finished with your Woke Olympics in here, can we move back to the actual story?
Anyways as mentioned earlier, definitely feel for everyone involved, including the guys family as it sounds like he had a whole host of mental issues. It raises the question on how, if he was diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses including psychosis, how was he able to get a gun & ammunition? I’m admittedly ignorant of the system in Canada, but wouldn’t background checks have prevented someone like him from acquiring a gun? That means he probably acquired it illegally, which apparently is also an issue that’s on the rise in Canada.

This is what I'd like to know as well. If he actually has a valid firearms licence, that is a MASSIVE failure of the system. On top of that, if he was known to Police for the wrong reasons, why wasn't his licence reviewed and revoked?
The background check is extensive. I had to provide 4 references and a criminal background check is done. I know numerous people are denied a licence each year due to mental health concerns. At least that's what the RCMP says.
Daily checks are done on licence holders to make sure they haven't popped up on police radar for the wrong reasons too.
Seems there was plenty of evidence beforehand that he shouldn't have a licence.

Do we know that he got the gun and ammunition through legal means? I didn't see that anywhere in the story yet?

No, hence the article related to illegal firearm sales in Canada.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toron...onto-1.4759159
Quote:
Legal Canadian gun owners are selling their weapons illegally, Di Danieli said, noting that police have seen more than 40 such cases in recent years.
The allure of a quick sell at a high profit margin is one reason legal owners might sell their guns. One man sold 47 guns and made over $100,000 in a five month period, the detective said.

Quote:
Overall, understanding the source of guns used criminally has also taken on a new urgency in light of the city's 220 shootings this year and 27 deaths as of July 9.

Sorry didn't read the article, then the question around licenses and background checks is irrelevant.

And yet the firearms lobby is telling us that bill C-71 is useless.

How would Bill C-71 have any effect on a guy who buys a illegal or smuggled gun and ammunition and doesn't have a fire arms license?
I'm honestly asking and not being a snarkhere, but I don't see how it would have prevented this shooting.

Well I doubt it's incredibly hard for someone to actually get their hands on a gun if they are looking. Just as with anything else in life, money talks and all it takes is having a friend or a friend of a friend who's involved in shaddy business to have one and there you go.
It's also quite possible that he may have either borrowed or stolen it from a friend who owned it legally.
I don't find it that shocking that he was able to get his hands on a weapon, this is the largest city in the country with arguably a large stockpiles of guns (for Canada) and has had a gun problem for a while now.
We have strict gun laws in Canada compared to the US, there you can literally go down the street with a few $50 bills and buy one or you can buy online and have it express delivered It's a little more difficult in Canada but not impossible, it's not like he was able to board an aircraft with an AR-15 at Toronto Pearson airport that everybody should be stunned.
Condolences to the victims and their families, as a Greek Canadian myself the Danforth has a special place in all of our hearts as so much of our Canadian history has revolved around that area for so many of us.

Did you read the article Nyah posted?
Canadians are buying guns legally, then re-selling them. Better tracking makes it harder for them to do that, and increases the risk to those who will ignore the rules.

This is basically textbook incitement of mob justice. "I've determined that this is terror-related, but CLEARLY the police and media are covering it up. Here are the addresses for the guy's residence and place of worship. You guys know what to do!"

Islamic state has claimed responsibility for a shooting in Toronto on Sunday that killed two people and wounded 13, the group’s AMAQ news agency said on Wednesday.
The attacker “was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the attack in response to calls to target the citizens of the coalition countries,” a statement by the group said.
The group did not provide further detail or evidence for its claim.

No it's not at all. You're completely wrong. On one hand you've got Toronto police saying there may be a connection to ISIS and on the other, 30 seconds after it happened, you've got Ralph Goodale saying this attack is in no way connected to terrorism...period. That distortion of the truth is what causes mob justice and conspiracies. You need truth not a neatly wrapped box.

must be quite the job that someone has at the islamic state to search news sites from various countries to find incidents like what happened in TO and then issue a statement to take responsibility for the incident

Gun used came from the States and then was sold to him by a gang member.
