Any deal we make has to move Brouwer's contract with it.
So that balances out on Montreal retaining much salary.
Our young center ice depth makes us a good fit for them I think.
To Mtl
Jankowski
Dube
Brouwer
#1 pick
To Cgy
Price ($1 Mill retained)
#2 Rd pick
I'd be pissed if we did that. Brouwers bad contract is peanuts compared to Price's. Let alone giving up another 1st, our top 3 prospect, and promising young 20 goal (eventually) scoring, big, and versatile center.

Wow, that's a huge NO.
The Flames are going to need Janko, Dube and the #1 round pick to be everyday players to remain competitive for the next few years. Depth and Cap management is what the Flames will be built on for the next 5 years.

The AAV is bad, but it's term that's the true deal killer. Bennett is up for a small renewal in a season. Smith is probably gone. Stone is gone the offseason after that.
Why are you so fixated on Carey Price? Why not another high end goalie?
Rinne, Bobrovsky, MAF and Varlamov are all UFA when Smith is done after this season, and I'm pretty sure at least two are going to test the market. If Calgary is able to make any noise next playoffs then we would be a very attractive destination for a high end UFA goalie.
I'm fine with another high end goalie, we were talking about Price.
I don't know where goalies became so undervalued - star goalies are star goalies. Yes, they can be inconsistent and have their bad stretches. But they also have it in them to, on more nights than not, be absolutely unbeatable.
Think of Kipper. Not perfect by any means. But had it in him to be the best in the world at any given moment. That's what you need from a goalie. We had forty games of it last year, and it was a strange experience. I had genuinely forgotten what it feels like to have an established number 1.
I just don't blame the goalie for the organizational tire fire that is the Montreal Canadiens. Prime Hasek couldn't do anything with that pail of pig slop. When I hear stories about Price wondering if the fans hate him, that tells me the guy needs a fresh start and playing in Montreal for a decade has been emotionally exhausting.
I began all of this by saying we won't get him, but I truly think Price, even with all his question marks, is a better gamble than any of the other available options. He might cost as much as Bobrovsky, who is not signing here.

With Price and our top 5 d, we have a 3 to 4 year window as elite contenders.
I'm OK to swing for the fences.
Alternatively swap out Jankowski and replace with Backlund.

While the Price contract is too burdensome long-term, I see the logic in upgrading our goaltending this off-season and going for it before Brodie/Hamonic/Stone hit UFA together in 2 years, Gio gets old, Tkachuk gets paid, and Gaudreau's contract runs out.
I'd be much more comfortable gambling these next 3-4 critical seasons on a proven goalie compared to an old/average Smith (this year) then hope that one of our young guys emerge. In an ideal world, we could upgrade our goalie position in a more cheap/non-crippling manner than Price. Probably not possible now, we're likely right up against the cap and can't risk sending away anymore prospects. But if we fail this year, IMO, it'll likely be because of goaltending (yet again!)...
Y'know, I'm starting to really wonder if Taylor Hall would pull a Tavares and sign with his favourite hometown team, the Flames, in 2 years?
The clip starting at 0:26 with the announcers got me thinking about it.
That certainly wouldn't make Oilers fans happy. Muhahaha.

It’s possible. Especially because he’s been vocally upset with how the Oilers shipped him out of town.

Hall for Gaudreau in a couple of deadlines from now.
Hall will extend with us and Johnny gets to go home.
This way neither side will lose a star for nothing and both parties get to go home.

I’d be okay with Hall for Gaudreau in a couple of years.
Would definitely shake things up if we haven’t accomplished anything by then. I value them both the same. I wouldn’t doubt Hall signing a 7 year extension here either.
Landing Hall would be amazing. Ive always been a huge fan of his. Im sure Jersey will try hard to make sure he never hits the market but you never know.
I hate to say it but without analyzing the dollars (Gaudrea would have 2 cheap years left) an extended Hall for Gaudreau deal would make sense - that is IF the flames still haven't taken a few more steps and they get a sense he may not re-sign.
When you analyze it Jersey would have to add as Gaudreau would have a couple years left at 6.75 and Hall would likely make 9+.
It would be an asset management move.
I cant believe we're even talking about this. I feel dirty.
When trading for Hall you have to take into account the off ice aspects to Hall. What are you giving up in Gaudreau for what baggage you are acquiring in Hall.
I think Hall's baggage is a big factor.

Can you elaborate on baggage? Almost every player who leaves the stink up north has baggage but then they get away and some have success. Dubnyk, Hall, Eberle, Cogliano, sucks for Yak though they ruined that kid

What baggage?
If his baggage is hating on Edmonton, then he will be perfect for this team.

I thought the whole point of hall pulling a Tavares with the flames is that we give up nothing for him. Gaudreau will be a flame... If he wants, Hall can come join.

If his baggage was his lazy back-checking and other on ice stuff, I think he can grow out of it if he already hasn't. If it's off ice I suspect it's not different than most other young stars - too young, too rich, too much free time. I'm sure some of the young Calgary guys are partiers. But that changes too, over time.

Everything I’ve heard about Hall off the ice is pretty much on par with what I’ve heard about Gaudreau off the ice.
And to be fair, they’re rumours. Saying Hall has baggage is a bit unfair.
