I would say that is a pretty decent improvement in overall team speed. Keep in mind too, Peters will coach a much more up tempo style than the plodding 5-man unit style Gulutzan deployed.

Team speed will not be an issue this year.
Not to mention Hanifin from the blueline.

Yeah, but Hamilton had wheels too so that's a bit more of a wash.

Certainly not taking a stiff out and adding a speedster, but Hanifin is off the charts for zone exit and entry rates in his third season.

A skill that has to be defended differently if you scheme around it.

So they must not plan on him being there to start the season, otherwise why would you tell him that?

I think it may be, now stay with me here, because Bergevin is really quite terrible at being a GM.

All of Marc Bergevin's moves are disconnected. There is no plan. There's not even a spoon.

To be fair, “there is no spoon” suggests a heightened sense of awareness. There is definitely a spoon here, Bergevin just insists it’s the best tool to cut a steak with.

I only wanted to say that I am really irritated by sentences which end with prepositions.

I once learned it was technically acceptable in English grammar, I’ve been doing it ever since.

Irritation can be understandable when your know where it comes from. But misusing prepositions is part of what the English language has come to. You just have to get used to it and what it looks like. It's nothing to be concerned about. Don't get mad, its what prepositions are now designed for.

For sure the change in systems and how aggressive D-men are allowed to play will in quick measure show the Flames much better off than they would have last season.

Looking back at the Flames 2nd and 3rd pairings under Hartley, and I don't think anyone is going to say that those D had wheels. However, they moved the puck quickly.

Hanifin will hopefully add a similar dimension to what Brodie was doing a few seasons ago, and that is to just become so difficult to forecheck against due to the lightning-quick turnaround thanks to the elite-level passing and skating. Like I stated after the trade, I would rather keep a Brodie than a Hamilton, and it looks like the Flames acquired another Brodie-type so to speak (and why I am extremely high on Kylington as well).

Gulutzan slowed the defencemen down, and I do think that if he was still here, we would not be seeing Hanifin's wheels and fast transition ability on display.

The Flames looked very slow last season, but there weren't many slow players on the team at all. Funny how a system can totally alter a team right down to its' perceived strengths.

Just for giggles, would you as a fan be on board with the Flames going further "all in" with something like:

To MTL:
2019 1st round pick
2020 2nd round pick
Troy Brouwer
Michael Stone

To CGY:
Max Pacioretty (w/ 6 year, 6M per)

Projecting 2019/2020's Salary Cap being at $82M would mean there's plenty of space for that deal to fit, here's a proposed breakdown:

CapFriendly.com Armchair-GM User-Generated Roster

FORWARDS (12)
Right wing: J. Neal ($5,750,000) - M. Tkachuk ($6,500,000) - M. Frolík ($4,300,000) - A. Czarnik ($1,250,000)
Centre: S. Monahan ($6,375,000) - E. Lindholm ($5,350,000) - M. Backlund ($5,350,000) - D. Ryan ($3,125,000)
Left wing: J. Gaudreau ($6,750,000) - M. Pacioretty ($6,000,000) - S. Bennett ($2,750,000) - M. Jankowski ($2,150,000)

DEFENSE (6)
Right: T. Brodie ($4,650,400) - T. Hamonic ($3,857,143) - R. Andersson ($755,833)
Left: M. Giordano ($6,750,000) - B. Kulak ($800,000) - N. Hanifin ($5,500,000)

GOALTENDER (1)
J. Gillies ($700,000)

DETAILS
Roster Size: 19
NHL Salary Cap: $82,000,000
Cap Hit: $78,663,376
Cap Space: $3,336,624

Really? I think a 1st + 2nd w/ cap going to Montreal for Patches seems like a solid deal.

We then have just amazing depth with a very strong push from the AHL. I feel like that'd be one hell of a way to really take that next step and become a Western Conference power.

You lost me as soon as I saw the words "1st round pick". Non starter right there, even if it's to get rid of Brouwer.
