There is some good stuff there, but I assume Ottawa wouldn't value that package as high as others, simply because it's missing that 1 high end piece.

Garrioch says it's down to three teams: Vegas, Tampa, and Dallas. Vegas and Tampa have been in on it since the trade deadline, Dallas is a latecomer after Tavares made his decision.
Vegas is the only team interested in also taking on Ryan's contract. Ottawa knows that including Ryan will reduce the return for Karlsson, but it also might be their only chance to get rid of his contract.

If Vegas is prepared to take the Ryan contract then this is absolutely the trade Ottawa makes. Melnyk won’t think twice about it.

Not sure, Ottawa has cap space. They should be focusing on obtaining really high end prospects and draft picks.
Trade should not be focused on Ryan in my opinion.
Its a bonus if a team will take Ryan and offer the best package deal.

Rumours out that melnyk is listening to offers for the team. I’m fairly certain he’s not selling as has been the case forever, but if he actually is considering it he may push for Ryan to be included in the deal to avoid paying for more of the contract while he waits on the sale. Pure uneducated speculation, but it just seems like something that would be in his strange little mind

Wonder if Ottawa would consider a trade for Michael Stone to fill out their D after this trade goes through. If they get rid of Ryan as well, will they make the salary cap floor?

Must suck to be a Senators fan. I can't believe they are actually open to accepting a middling return for one of the best players in the league if it means they can get rid of a bad contract. That's just an awful way to run a professional sports team.

It's ridiculous to think that Melnyk hasn't learned his lesson from all the backlash from everything he's done previously including their latest deal to get rid of their problem child. The Sharks just flipped him for a greater return and the fans got pissed. This could be more the same. What a dummy. Makes you wonder if he got rich just being cheap.

Especially when they are already going to have one of the lowest payrolls if they trade Karlsson without Ryan

Celebrated Square Root Day

The sad thing about the Sens is this mess was likely started when they moved into Kanata. Seemed like a great deal on land at the time, but ultimately left them merely adequate in revenue during their best years and starving during any and all dips in success.

Melnyk is such a brutal owner. Wonder how the negations are going with Mark Stone and how Melnyk will feel about shelling out for a big contract.

How are the sharks not in on this? This is Doug Wilson’s wet dream.

Talk that Karlsson will only sign extension with Vegas TB or Dallas. No sense acquiring him to be a rental.

Given the choice between those teams, then Tampa is a no brainer. If he can force Ottawa's hand to choosing Tampa then that would be the optimal choice.
I think I'd rather choose San Jose over Vegas or Dallas as options though. He only has a 10 team no trade list, so if he is only willing to discuss extension with those three teams he is really limiting himself AND the Senators. At this point he obviously doesn't care about the Senators though.

Doubt Dorion is taking calls from Wilson anymore. Nature of the business.
Vegas is the only team that can add the 18 mil in cap necessary for Ryan to be included with Karlsson. You have to think they still have the inside track.

Ottawa would have to send him out west. Trading Karlsson into your own division would come back to bite you. Also, it would be even more horrible for fan morale.

It all depends on the return. If TB sends a massive return that far outstrips other offers, the Ottawa absolutely should move Karlsson there.

I think as a GM you need to get the absolute best deal possible regardless of geography. I never understood the concept of taking a lesser return because you are worried about the player coming back to haunt you 4 or 5 games a season as opposed to 2 out of conference. Get the best return so you can be more competitive for the other 75+ games on your schedule.
