Was just about to post the same thing. Saving ~$1M here and ~$1M there is how this was accomplished. Including not only Johnny and Monny but also trading for Hamonic on such a team-friendly deal!
If it weren't for that Brouwer blemish -> he'd be a 10/10 on new contracts. And I blame Brouwer more than Treliving...what happened to his game?
Oh well. Needs to sign-seal-and-deliver Hanifan and Lindholm now. #norest

It can't be. You just showed how things were said before and it didn't work. So I guess this was doomed from the get go.

- what we’ve been missing
- term not great
- Add flexibility
- upgrade on existing talent
- are we a contender now?
This time is different though, right?

Neal has played 60 fewer games and put up 154 more points.
Brouwer has .45 points per game over his career, Neal has .70.
Neal has scored 55.56% more points per game than Brouwer has, over their careers, and 45% more points overall.
Brouwer: 763 GP 169G 172A 341P
Neal: 703 GP 263G 232A 495P
If you want to look at only the last five years:
Brouwer is .43 PPG in 396 games while Neal is .69 PPG in 349.
Goals are 129 - 83, again in Neal's favour.
So ya, it's different this time, because James Neal is a better hockey player than Troy Brouwer.

Overrated and has been pretty poor in the playoffs the past 2 seasons. The fact that 2 finalists decided to move on without him should be an indication.

Yeah, and it's not like there was an expansion draft one year and he went UFA the next, amirite?

1. He played the Nashville run with a broken hand.
2. Nashville lost him in expansion.
3. Vegas tried to re-sign him

Don't you bring facts into this. Two cup finalists let James Neal leave and that's all there is to it.

Since and including the 2013 playoffs 7 NHL players have more playoff goals than James Neal.
They are: Ovechkin, Kucherov, Malkin, Crosby, Tyler Johnson, Guentzel and Kuznetsov.
Since Neal's first year in the league (2008-09), only 10 NHL players have more playoff goals than him.
Interestingly enough, his highest regular season shooting percentage coincided with the lowest goal total of his career.

One team decided he was not worth protecting and the other decided he wasn't worth what he wanted despite having a ton of cap space.

Sorry, but no. I watched or listened to almost every game he played for Vegas because I was interested in the expansion story and Neal was an impact almost every night, even if he didn't see the score sheet.

Nashville used a 4-4-1 protection format.
So because he wasn't one of their top 4 forwards means they didn't want him. Sure thing.

Just thinking how Treliving did a good job of taking the sting out of no 1st or 2nd round pick out of this 2018 off-season.
The prospect cupboard may stay status-quo for a year...but he'll likely lock-up 20+ years of great contracts by the time all is said and done!

12 playoff goals in the last 2 playoffs (44 games), and a minus player on 2 100 point clubs. And now will be on the wrong side of 30. I hope he does well, but I can see this backfiring

No you don’t. You bet against Calgary last season IIRC. It’s fine to admit you’re not a fan of the team and the players on it.

For those apprehensive about Neal’s contract, here’s a few comparables.
Patrick Marleau
Last 3 seasons: 19G 57P / 25G 48P / 27G 46P
Age: 37, signed a 3 year contract at 6.25 million with a NMC/NTC
James Neal
Last 3 seasons: 31G 58P / 23G 41P / 25G 44P
Age: 30, signed a 5 year contract at 5.75 million with no NMC/NTC
Ilya Kovalchuk
Last 3 seasons: 16G 49P / 32G 78A / 31G 63P
Age: 35, signed a 3 year contract at 6.25 million with an NMC/NTC
*KHL points (so take that as you may)
Milan Lucic
Last 3 seasons: 24G 59P / 18G 44P / 20G 55P
Age: 28, signed a 7 year contract at 6.0 million with an NMC/NTC
David Backes
Last 3 seasons: 27G 57P / 26G 58P / 21G 45P
Age: 32, signed a 5 year contract at 6.0 million with an NMC/NTC.
Given that list, I think Neal would still be my top choice. He’s the cheapest, the 2nd youngest, with comparable stats. I also think not having a NMC/NTC is a lot bigger deal than is being made.
