Considering St. Louis basically dumped Bergenlund and Sobotka, I don't know how anyone can look at this trade as an overpayment.
This move pushes Bozak to #3C where he belongs. All in all St. Louis got stronger and while not in the same division I can see them being direct competition again for the wild card spots.
Sucks!

Huge over payment. I really don't think ROR is that great.

St. Louis has been trying to dump Berglund and Sobotka for a while, and Thompson isn't high on their prospect list
Good deal for St Louis IMO. They're fans seem to be very happy with it

Pretty interesting comparing this to the Hamonic trade IMO.

Yeah I think it's a pretty solid trade for the Blues. A couple of salary dumps and less draft picks than the Flames gave up for Hamonic. Berglund is a good depth player though but I think the Blues have to be very happy about what it took to get a solid 2nd line center.

I don't see how anyone sees this as a massive haul for the Sabres. Berglund and Sobotka combine for a $7.35 million dollar cap hit, they are decent depth players sure but the Blues essentially threw two expendable players away, a decent prospect in Thompson, a protected 1st (which could be quite late) and then a pick in 2021.

Yeah I’m not even a big ROR fan and don’t think the return for Buffalo is great. Getting rid of that $7.35M of cap space is huge by the Blues.
Reminds me a bit of the Feaster trades where you foolishly set a very specific price (1st, 2nd, Prospect) and potentially miss on better quality because you had a set quantity of pieces you wanted back.

I imagine paying the signing bonus would have eliminated some teams.

I think it's ridiculous to assume Johnnie would give 2 ####s about what Ryan O'Reilly makes.

I think this is a good trade for St. Louis. I love Berglund as a player, but he really is just 'meh'. He is a strong all-around player with size. He is just not ever a player that can take over a game. Expensive trade all around for St. Louis, but they got better today. That is some seriously strong center depth, and that team is going to be much better at both ends of the ice.

I get it but honestly this club should be in contention mode now.
Not sure i see a lot of goals from 2019 1st rounder passing over to 2020 2nd rounder over to player x for a tap in.......happening the next 3 years.

You can debate the players and trades all you want, but this certainly demonstrates the opportunity cost of the Hamonic trade. I am surprised at anyone who thinks the Hamonic trade was good value for the Flames and then sees this as a huge overpayment for the Blues.

So was ROR one of the deals Tre was referring to as deals still to be announced that fell through?

No, he clarified that he had 2 contract offers made to players.
Safe to assume Graovac was the 2-way offer, then there's another one that is likely still out there (Maroon most likely based on the rumours and fit about still addressing the loss of physicality).

St Louis got a great deal. I am surprised we didn't beat this with Buffalo willing to take on cap space.

I see this as a win for both sides. St. Louis loading up big time and is probably a top team in the West now. But Buffalo now has Eichel, Dahlin and three first round picks next year? Yowza. Potential to be a contender for a long time.

I agree that in a quality for quantity trade, quality almost always wins.
But I also compare this to signing Neal in FA, and I would much rather have an extra year on a contract than give up 4 or 5 assets.
