Maroon adds the "nasty" to the lineup so I am ok with that. But he will look out of place in the top 6 so he has to play on the 3rd or 4th line. Do we have room and is he going to be another big contract like Brouwer?

If they get him for cheap then this may be pretty good. An enforcer to some extent that can play a regular shift.

One thing about Maroon is that he is very good defensively as well as being hard to play against.

Still feels like a signing that wont work out to me though...all depends on term IMO.

This is the only way signing Maroon makes sense. Having them both would be ridiculous.

The problem is less the player, and more how badly we'd overpay for him.

You must get rid of Brouwer - by any means necessary - if you sign him.

If the flames are looking for toughness, I think I'd rather they help the leafs out by taking Martin off their hands.

Maybe a 5th round pick to the Leafs for Martin and a 7th round pick type of deal.

Martin is similar to Reaves in that he's a decent skater and big hitter who can fight pretty well.

Only two more years at around $2.5 per.

Reading HFboards Oilers.. there are comments like "Maroom wouldnt do this, he loves Edmonton".. or "stay in the east" or "need to keep Lucic because of Tkachuk and Maroon"

Oilers fans seem dissapointed he is coming to Calgary which is encouraging. However, they are hoping its a $5 Mil contract. Personally ~3sh mil I am okay with on 3 year deal.

The player makes sense considering we traded Ferland away and needed toughness. This is not the top 6 solution I was hoping for.

Out Ferland, Stajan, Hathaway/Versteeg/Jagr, hopefully Brouwer
In Maroon, Ryan, Cznarik, Lindholm

Looks like an upgrade just not huge. The defense could be an upgrade if Brodie and Hamonic bounce back playing in different pairings but on paper it is worse

Guys who play hard around the net and bang in goals on a regular basis are always welcome on my team. I'd be fine with Maroon if the cap hit isn't too big.

If the Flames sign another guy I’d have to figure some depth gets packaged together for some bigger names.

NHL forwards
Gaudreau
Monahan
Tkachuk
Backlund
Lindholm
Frolik
Ryan
Jankowski
Bennett
Czarnik
Brouwer
Lazar
Mangiapane
Foo

Adding Maroon to that means someone is stuck in the A

Feels like the Flames are getting a bunch of guys who are good around the net and tip ins. Lindholm, Tkachuk, Ryan, Maroon etc.

Newsflash.. if we sign Maroon, it will be at least a Brouwer-like contract.. no way he comes in under 4.5 with a term of at least 3 years. We sorely need someone like Maroon on the team, and his agent probably knows that. If he signs here, it will be for significant money.

One of Czarnik, Foo and Mangiapane won't make the team. I think they are direct competitors. Ideally, Brouwer is moved somehow. He is the most direct correlation with Maroon. Along with Hathaway.

Neal vs Maroon:

44 points for Neal with 25g
43 points for Maroon with 17 goals

Both LHS. Same size.

Would rather Neal and his bump up on goals but I get why the Flames would kick down to Maroon who may be cheaper.

This is the problem, its likely his last contract so....hes not likely taking any discounts.

A lot of our offense was driven from the points in recent years. These acquisitions make sense from that point of view.

People are too quick to judge, especially as a rumour.

If it's 3M AAV for 2 years, it's an amazing contract for a player capable of playing up the lineup (top line on both Edmonton and Anaheim) while bringing in toughness. And, while not the most succesfful, a big body to play on the PP while Peters loves his four forward units.

If it's 6M AAV for 7 years, it's a disaster bringing in a player who's been propped up but not only McDavid but Getzlaf and Perry before him and will be older than 35 by the time the contract is over.

But it's somewhere in between and that's what's going to make or break this being a good signing or a bad one.
