At the expense of who? One of the most annoying things is when players get ice time ahead of others who should be given the time. And save your argument about who Ryan played ahead of in Carolina. The fans in Carolina thought he got the Brouwer treatment and was gifted ice time for the Hurricanes, and with some damn good players. I guess you have to ask how you would react if Ryan was gifted time with the Flames ahead of guys like Bennett and Jankowski, who have much greater upside, but need opportunity? Then how would you react if Ryan is gifted this time, and generated Brouwer type numbers?
I would rather not roll the dice of bringing in an undersized player with little track record who has a connection to the coach, who the fans of his previous team complained of the very same things we did about Brouwer. I mean, after all the pissing and moaning on this site about Ferland and he not deserving his ice time? Or was Ferland not effective and produced? There were plenty here suggesting Ferland was gifted time, yet he was effective and productive. I don’t like the potential for this signing to turn a lot worse than Brouwer and really become problematic for the team and the room.

Nope. It’s like suggesting that Maroon’s numbers in Edmonton are all on him, and not him leeching points off of McDavid. The question you have to ask is, is Ryan a 40 point player, or just a guy who scored 40 points. Based on him not cracking the NHL until his 30’s, I call the latter. I don’t see Ryan being a player that should be getting ice time ahead of most of our roster, especially a number of our young guys. Our long term success is going to be based on the development and contribution of these young players, not the addition of some third year 30something marginal player.
