Well that sucks I had already got excited at the thought of adding Ryan but not at a stupid price/term. Man I hate the Leafs I don't want them to get Tavaras or Ryan

Yeah, there has to be some rational logic behind everything Tree does tomorrow.

Externally though, there are no alternatives in my eyes. Kyle Brodziak, or someone like Zack Smith...they’re not going to improve this team. Matt Stajan brings more than both of those players on the ice in my eyes.

Kyle Brodziak is worse than Troy Brouwer. Adding Brodziak would actually make our 4th line worse, and that’s some kinda accomplishment.

I thought $3.5M was a reasonable overpayment for free agency - and I could even see $3.75M-$4M if the term is right, as I look at Ryan as a better free agency signing than Frolik.

if they miss out on Ryan/Czarnik, maybe Brendan Gibbons out of NJ is supposedly a interesting player...

i'd also look at Stone for Pageau

If they don't get Ryan, just use Lindholm at centre with Tkachuck and Bennett/Foo and have Jankowski centre the fourth line with Mangaipane and Hathaway.

Put Bennett/Foo with Gaudreau/Monahan.

Ridiculous
That's what happens when there is more money than players to spend it on. I'm surprised more players don't at least test it out.

Im betting he signs in Calgary unless he gets stupid money elsewhere. Toronto and their sloppy seconds offer makes me laugh.

Leafs have to be careful with term. Their ELC guys will be coming up for new contracts after this year (and they have Nylander to sign for this year).

I wish the NHL would take a page from baseball and realize long term contracts for players past 29 is a bad idea ...

make July 1st a complete non news day.

If the Flames literally do nothing tomorrow I won't be upset, if I was a GM I'd have a $5M and 5 year max on any outside UFAs

Yes, I totally agree.

As a fan I love free agency day because of all the player movement. I'm always in the mountains on Canada day and I'm always finding the best place for reception so I can check out to see what the Flames are doing. As a fan it's fun.

However, I don't follow the Flames to see what they do on Canada day. I follow them because I love the sport of hockey. I want to see my team do well on the ice. Adding a player for double the aav and term on FA just to say you got somebody is not going to help the team in the long run.

just checking into Ryan a bit; interestingly, the kid played in the WHL with Spokane and after than he played 4 years at UofA...

so at least the guy has some experience playing in Calgary and living in AB... so i think that its a positive, esp for an american player.

Plus he played under Peters both in Carolina and in the Whl with Spokane. I think he ends up signing here.

If the decision was made that player A was the right fit for the lineup, I would rather pay up an extra $500k to a $1M, rather than miss out and settle on Player B, who isn't as good a fit in the lineup.

Get the guy you want, or do nothing.

Come on Leafs or Wild. Help the Flames dodge this bullet. I hate coaches that bring in their ex-players, especially role players. I don’t see an undersized center addressing the needs of this team, and I don’t want to see a coach’s favorite available to him coming in fresh and not knowing what he has on this roster or in our system.

“Coach’s favourite” requires some added context. Peters depended a lot on Ryan and played him in the powerplay because his next best options were Lee Stempniak and Victor Rask. He is going to have a tonne more options at his disposal here in Calgary.

Riley Nash would be a comparable signing for teams looking at Ryan. Both right shot centermen who put up ~15/40 last season. Nash is bigger and younger, but not as good at faceoffs
