Athletic reporting that the Leafs #1 target if they miss out on Tavares is Derek Ryan.

But the Leafs have also worked on some contingency plans in case they don’t get Tavares, who is believed to be choosing between the Islanders, Sharks and Leafs at this point.

At the top of that contingency list appears to be Derek Ryan.

Everything has been pointing to the Calgary Flames signing Ryan when he hits the free agent market at noon on Sunday, but I’m told he has multiple suitors willing to give him a multi-year deal worth more than $3-million a season. It’s believed that the Leafs have told Ryan to not make a final decision until they know what’s happening with Tavares, as he would then become their next target.

His numbers would indicate yes.

Ryan is a great target because he can play up and down your line-up. After JVR and Neal, I view Ryan as the best way to improve the team.

If we can’t sign who we want, don’t go for Plan B and Plan C options. Go back into the trade market and try and improve the team, or just push youth. We have two forwards “right there” in Foo and Mangiapane.

3 x 3.33 (10 mill) seems like a doable contract IMO for a guy who while older seems to have a good length of road in front of him.

Rieder + Ryan is who I hope we get this off season; let Lindholm have a top 6 RW spot, load Tkachuk up on the top line and open up spots for Dube/Foo/Mangiapane to compete for.

and on the flip side, if Treliving doesn't do anything because prices are too high and he would put himself in cap jail for signing anybody this place will also freak out.

Prediction: On July 1, there will be plenty of people freaking out because Treliving doesn't agree with their ideas on what is best for the team.

just thankful the NHL has a salary so Calgary can even be involved in a bidding war... in the old, no salary cap days, if TO was interested in a player, Calgary would have zero chance of getting them based on money alone.

Ryan seems to be a kid the fancy stats like... hopefully Peters relationship with him gives Calgary the edge

well, you are kind of agreeing with me. Ryan would be a good add. But if he wants, say $5M you see what alternatives there are. Internally and externally.
