Didn't we trade Leopold for Bouwmeesters rights and he signed before the deadline. I mean it was still a pretty big pickup though.
But really if you were a Big name UFA that had all the pickings in the NHL, would you pick Calgary who has arena and stability issues / team that hasn't done much since 2004.
I think once Calgary starts making noise in the west and actually making strides to become a true cup contender, that's when we'll see some actual interest in the big catches.

Help, save, whatever.

So because no news has still come out is it a good.bet Tavares is going to free agency.
You would think if he told.the NYI they would have announced it.
Maybe he told Lou no but Lou is trying to change his mind?
If he was staying in NY I thought it woukd have been announced by now so they had plenty of time to draw up the contract.

If I had to guess he's probably told Lou that he better trade for a goalie quick if they have any shot at signing him

Or someone is taking their time deciding where they want to live and work for the better part of the next decade.

My take on it is that the silence is probably an indication that he and the Islanders are trying to hammer out the final touches of a deal. If he was definitely leaving, I think we would have heard this afternoon.

Yeah I'm sure TSN would love to break news that he's leaving as there would be a frenzy in the Toronto market.

Calgary has to do the same, as the Flames/city is only marginally better than the Peg in desire for free agents to play. Jaybo having a local connection(born in Edmonton) so we had an advantage from that perspective. The reality is we have never been a top UFA destination and I cant see that changing.
Teams like Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton need to develop internally and make smart wise trades. Unless we want to focus on the second and third tier UFAs, which is plausible.

I disagree. While Calgary is no ny, toronto, etc big market ,they are a step up on the peg and Edmonton as far as destination city. I know some posters don't think this but a new arena would make calgary a very intriguing place to play as far as Canadian market goes. Calgary really needs that new arena and not just for hockey

Come on Lou. Up your GD offer. Nobody can match the Isles money wise with that extra year they have available to them.

I agree - all this talk of him signing a 1 year x 15.9 mill deal is crazy talk; why would JT take a risk like that when he can secure his next almost decade ahead of him.

Very true and that was a big risk but I think it’s because ultimately he does want a change of scenery - question now is it NYI is able to commit enough for him to consider staying loyal to one franchise.
I think he is a SJS at the end of the day unfortunately.

I believe they are out. They just gave big money to Couture and are rumoured to be tied to acquiring Patches out of Montreal. IMO there have only been two real contenders in this anyhow, the Islanders and Toronto.

He's leaving the Island.
I see his indecision as a sign of him making a change and trying to find the best fit for him to win and make money. I think it is more about picking an organization that has a chance to win, and is also well run. Things weren't great in NYI and bringing in Lou to run the ship was the owner's answer to try and keep the best player they've had since the 80s dynasty.
I think the only thing he has decided is to move on and he is taking his time to ensure he picks the right place. He doesn't want to go to a place that will struggle to build around it's top players like NYI has done.
Sure the ownership has changed, and they've brought in somebody to clean house in the hockey ops and turn the franchise into a well run organization, but I think it was too little too late to sell NYI to Tavares.
He's leaving town.

Have to wonder if the agency is enjoying being in the eye of the storm. Surely he has eliminated one to four teams by now.
Notify them already

I’ll likely get some heat for this, but I don’t care. I really hope for the Leafs here. Two reasons....
1. My late father grew up in Toronto and was a Leafs fan until he died, I wish he could have had another opportunity to see the Leafs win a cup (he was young when they won in ‘67)
2. As a hockey player and fan for my whole life, there is something really cool about playing for your home town team. For some reason, I think this may be the closer for Tavares. Even with the media frenzy in T.O., I think it may just happen and I think that’s pretty cool if it does.
