I feel like they should move to having penalty kicks after any draw in the knockout stage.
The game would still be a draw and the result of the PK would only be used in a final tiebreaker scenario between the two teams.
Feels like a much better outcome than fair play points or the coin flip.

They are thinking of doing this in 2026.
3-2-1-0 points system.

Great idea. Something needs to be done to reduce or remove draws and tie breaker scenarios.
Despite all the diving and VAR controversies the two things which have made me the angriest this Cup were the French Denmark game and the last 15 minutes of the Japan Poland game which reeked of collusion.

Usa today had an option today i liked for when we go to 48
12 groups of 4
Top 2 of each group advance, but the top 8 group winners advance straight to qf, bottom 4 group winners and 12 2nd place teams go to r16 KOs
I like that a lot better than the 3 man groups

That actually looks like a much better method for the 48 team world cup. Any idea when they will announce if Canada and Mexico automatically get in (or has it already been announced)?

That's not bad but also its 72 first round games.
Plus 8 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 2 = 96 games.
It's supposed to be only 80

They might have simultaneous start times if they do this method, otherwise the group stage will drag on for too long.

When was that done in the EUro? I know that scenario could have played out like that in EURO 08 with Czechs v Turkey, but that match had the crazy finish where Turkey scored late to tie(which would have sent it to PK's to decide 2nd place) but then Turkey scored again right after to win it.
I know the PK's on last day of group stage exists as a rule in EUROs, but I don't remember it taking place before.

Yes. I meant the provision had been put in for the Euros before.

What in the world is Argentina doing? No Aguero, Dybala or Higuain? That’s just hilarious at this point.

The ref didn't draw a line so you could all stand in front of it, Argentina. Ref should've yellow-carded their entire wall.

The worst part about that foul is as fast as Mbappe is and was certainly going to get that ball, that wasn't going to be an easy goal to score. Stupidity from Rojo.

Playing Messi as the lone striker is as idiotic as it gets.

Mbappe is terrorizing them. Great pass from Pogba on that one.
