Fortunately this simply doesn't happen often to the Flames. I can recall plenty of post game threads where we discussed bad special teams, bad goaltending, bad coaching, bad shooting, etc after losses but very few where the consensus after a loss that the lack of a face puncher was the difference.

Give me a break. What is Reaves going to do to Eric Staal five minutes after he slashes Gaudreau on the hand?

I guess we don’t know because it happened when the flames did not have a deterrent. But I guess a real life example pales in comparison to your opinion.

The two teams that played for the Stanley cup don’t subscribe to your way of thinking but I am sure they are also wrong right?

How about you give us all a break.

Someone better tell Yzerman how to build a good team, his biggest goon is Stamkos. I bet with Reaves in the lineup for a full year, the Vegas Golden Knights will be 10 points better next year.

No, with the narrative around here they'll easily be 20 points worse. They wasted money and a roster spot on a tough guy after all.

I'm not of the opinion that you need a tough guy like this to win, but I also don't think it necessarily hurts either.

What am I to give you a break from? Isn’t this a discussion forum?

You should take a break from claiming you know everyone’s playing history and hockey knowledge.

Yawn
You threw out the give me a break first and now when I say it back your feelings get hurt?
I never once claimed I know everyone’s playing history or extreme hockey knowledge. I did however state facts that the two teams in the finals had deterrents and that when Johnny was hurt there was no deterret on the flames. I also explained that as someone who has played a high level of hockey I can confirm that teams play different when there is a big guy policing the ice. All of these are simple facts, no more no less. If you don’t like facts then you will not enjoy discussion forums.

Uh, you claimed that the only way anyone could have such an opinion was due to not playing hockey beyond bantam.

Those teams also had elite talent, goaltending and coaching. A lot of teams that also had ‘deterrents’ missed the playoffs.

When Johnny was hurt we had Engelland.

Yes, they do play different. On home ice, they line match their top lines to take advantage of the slower, less hockey skilled opposition. The Flames weren’t suddenly a cup contender by signing Reaves to play eight fourth line minutes. The elite teams are already miles above and can win in spite of having a 2 goal scorer on the fourth line.

But I mean I suppose if I had played high level hockey I’d know that Reaves could keep Brodie from getting a concussion, Gaudreau a broken finger and even multiple concussions for Crosby.

I never "claimed that the only way anyone could have such an opinion was due to not playing hockey beyond bantam". I did say your ridiculous "A tough is never a deterrent. It’s just a fabricated illusion fans make up" comment was spoken like someone who has never played past bantam. This was not a personal attack and i apologize if it came across that way, I said this because people who have played hockey at a higher level knows this is just simply not true. Deterrents are visible everywhere from the pack leader being the biggest animal to countries arms races. This isn't my opinion this is a way of life and hockey is no different, we could fill this thread to 60 pages giving examples of how intimidation and threat are major motivators in peoples actions and responses.

There ya go, there is a fact in your argument because those teams were exactly what you said they were I fully agree. You used also in that sentence so I'm glad you agree that they also had a deterrent. Engelland was a tough player and i really liked him as a flame but I don't think many people would put him and Reaves or Wilson in the same category. They toss their bodies and get in the face of the other teams and their main skill set. Engelland stepped up when he was required to, he didn't go looking for it.

No one in the entire thread said any of that, Not even close. No one said that the Flames would be a Stanley Cup contender by adding him nor that any injuries would have been negated by having him. I like a discussion as much as the next guy but when the person on the other end is making grand exaggerations, moving the goal posts and completely taking the responses out of context is no longer a discussion its a rant.

Has it been reported what he is being signed for?

I find it interesting that the news reports are saying he will sign the contract on Sunday. Since he is already with the Knights, why is he waiting till Sunday to sign his contract?

Actually, even in decent level Bantam there was intimidation factors involved. Change Bantam to PeeWee hockey(back when minor hockey made sense by allowing checking in Peewee). Deterrents are a factor in hockey, even in the mild mannered game that the NHL is now.

Why hasn't this been made official yet? He doesn't have to wait until tomorrow to re-sign with Vegas. Was it just a ploy to get better offers from the other suitors?

Weird. I though Vegas was a team that had done everything right and one we’re supposed to emulate. Now they’re the ones making regretful decisions. Interesting. Should we still emulate them? Or....?

I don't want just any tough guy for the Flames - I agree that many are a waste of a roster spot - but I really liked the idea of signing Reaves. He brings a ton of swagger, REALLY sticks up for his team-mates, and looks like he has fun on the ice. I want him on my team.

It would be useful for this debate if AC put together a highlight package of Gaudreau getting slashed, his team mates heading to the bench and Gaudreau whining to the ref.

Then put a highlight package of Marchessault (similar size and skill) going hard into the play making hits and winning puck battles.

i just thought Reeves brought more than the avg tough guy... i think his team mates really fed of his intensity on the ice...

if he's off the table, then, i don't think there's too many other guys i'd be interested in (Roussel, but not at that price)....
