After signing Kovalchuk, they don't have a lot of cap space.

I absolutely think the Flames will pay him $4.5M to not play. I think he will be the 13th/14th forward this year.
UNLESS, they can find a top 6 guy to sign, at which point Brouwer is a buyout.
Either way, I doubt very much that he is in the starting 12 lineup for this team, unless there are a rash of injuries in preseason.

We may have to wager on this, I hope to god you're right (100% serious) but sadly this should have been the case last season and yet Troy was gifted constant playing time while getting looks in the top 6 and continued PP time without actually providing any offense.

Yeah his Qualifying offer would have been just under 2.5m. Signing Kovalchuk meant Rieder was the odd man out.

Time will tell if that was just a Gulutzan thing. Sure hope it was

I always liked Reider because of this:

But I wonder if Dube could provide the same.

Hmmm a player that actually wants a short term contract? Im liking this guy. Maybe hes looking to see how he fits in, likes the locale or not, before he goes for a longer term? Just the kind of player we want here assuming he plays well of course. Might be worth paying a little more for a guy with the right attitude. Pretty sure hes not going back to the Oilers after they traded him away no matter how much they offer him.

Must think he can prove he's worth more money than he'd get offered now. I agree with you, I like that. Guy wants to prove something

I think he wants a short-term deal so he can prove himself and then get a massive payment in 2 years. He is a solid player and just had a bad year imo.

Terrific, keep going after these average players to build your average roster Treliving. Have we heard about a single player who's actually going to make a difference on say the PP?
We finished tied for 5th last in the NHL in goals and we've actually lost goals from the Hamilton and Ferland departures, surely he has to know that. Treliving's talent evaluation is clearly becoming his undoing. The list of bad is so heavily outweighing his good that it just cannot continue.

As bad as Brouwer is, he was probably the 11 or 12th best Flames forward last season. Plus Gulutzan loved to use him on both special teams. So there's 2 reasons other than salary that the Flames played him in the NHL.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that the Flames sign Ryan and Reaves, and that is it (they are unable to acquire a top 6). Even if that is the case, I believe the top 9 would be (in no particular order, just top 9):
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Bennett - Jankowski - Tkachuk
Frolik - Backlund - Ryan
that leaves:
Lazar, Mangiapane, Dube, Foo, Brouwer, and Reaves
for the 4th line and popcorn munching. And that's the worst case, nobody-steps-up scenario.
I believe they will try to acquire another top 9, which would push Ryan down into the 4th line group, making it even more crowded.
Also, what if Mangiapane or Dube or Foo could crack the top 9? That could push Frolik down to the 4th line as well.
Imagine if they sign a UFA, and either Mangiapane or Dube can step up? Then the lineup looks something like this:
Gaudreau - Monahan - UFA
Bennett - Jankowski - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Backlund - Lindholm
Frolik - Lazar - Ryan
Reaves,
(Dube, Foo, Brouwer)
and then add Reider to that!
IMO, Brouwer will not be part of the 'starting top 12' this year.

We haven't even hit July 1st yet and he has already made one blockbuster trade. How about we give him until September to make these claims?
You have no idea what is brewing and we might still see another big trade. Or we might not and you might be right.... but its still only June 29th and the season doesn't start for another 3 months.

I get that but on the other hand it wasn't scoring from their top guys that was lacking last year it was the lack of offense from the bottom half of the roster. This addresses that

You must have missed the part where the Flames top 6 were quite good, but the bottom 6 put up woefully underwhelming numbers. If you want to improve team goal scoring numbers, you need to improve offensive depth. Reider does that.

go watch a Lindholm video and watch him screening and redirecting pucks. He'll be a massive help. And oh, don't forget Geoff Ward ...
People are too focused on a top 6 forward. Non-existent secondary scoring killed us last year, yet people complain when Treliving correctly goes after players like Ryan and Rieder who'd actually give us a competent 3rd line for once. Mind-boggling.
