What I found from the Hamilton trade is that expectations can have a big impact on reaction.
How about everyone here just assume that the Flames will sign Ryan to a 5 year $25,000,000 deal and when the actual contract comes in, we can all be happy and praise Treliving for getting a great deal?
If you expect Ryan to sign a 1 year, $1 million dollar, you are going to be dissappointed.

He's 31 years old. He's not progressing. He is what he is which is a solid depth player that gained the trust of his coach in Carolina that played him a lot in a top 6 role. I'm not against bringing him as a utility guy but if Peters uses him heavily in the top 6 I'm not sure that will be a good thing for this team.

Bingo was quoting somebody who talking about Lindholm, and that's who he is referring to as well.

1) I'm glad we're looking at picking up players from anywhere other than Arizona
2) I don't have a problem with the coach picking up his guy to join us. It helps with the transition to Peters' style of play
3) I'd rather give up prospects or draft picks to get a team to take Brouwer than I would buy him out. But i'd buy him out before I let him back near the team this season.

I wouldn't hate the signing, but I am suspicious of any 31-going-on-32 yo UFA. I still hope we sign Czarnik instead and reap the rewards there. I don't expect Ryan to have a team-friendly cap hit / term and it's possible we are looking at 34-35yo Ryan as we looked at 34yo Stajan - a lame duck.

Flames fans: Why are we trying to sign this guy?
Uh, maybe so we don't have to suffer through another year of Lomberg, Hathaway, Stajan, Brouwer and Lazar types fumbling through another season of NOT scoring any goals tohelp the team win maybe?
Just a guess.

Wow actually he’s had a really interesting career, just looking at his hockeydb page. Love seeing stories of guys making it to the show later on, especially coming through Canadian university hockey.

2 years at $2.5M per is an acceptable deal. We just need another top 6 forward and I keep thinking the Wild are our best trade partner in terms of players we could use (Neideriter, Zucker, Coyle) and look to be shaking the roster up.
Anaheim has always had rumored interest in Bennett and also looking to shake things up?

I suspect you’re right. But fact is Ferland has scored more with less ice time and significantly less PP time. Yes he had better linemates but from what I have seen of the numbers, Lindholm spent majority of his time with high quality linemates in Carolina.
Different stratospheres? Guess it depends how you are defining your stratospheres but I don’t see a problem in suggesting that Lindholm needs to continue to improve for the Flames to take a step forward. Lindholm has yet to prove he is much of a goal scorer and it’s not because he hasn’t been given opportunities.

I think you have to be careful about these types of signings. I was reading the Canes' fans opinion of Ryan, and there are some quality posts between all the irrational ones. There are some real concerns with his ability - namely how easily he is knocked off pucks, and other concerns.
At the end of the day, we also have to ask: "Why does Carolina not want to re-sign Ryan?". If he is such a valuable piece, then they should be actively trying to sign him, no? He has no sandpaper in his game at all - that's great if you think this is the 'new type' of 4th liner, but there is a reason why Carolina sought Ferland in this trade. You need sandpaper types in today's game - it is still a contact sport last time I checked.
I am not against signing Ryan - as long as the term AND the dollar value is in line with what it should be for a 4th liner. I don't want to see 2.5 million. I don't even want 2 million.
In today's cap world, you pay your stars good money, and you pay your replacement-level players replacement level money. You don't splurge on 4th liners. That's how you get into cap trouble. Brouwer is only a recent reminder of that. Stajan - even though he was loved in the room, decent on draws and decent defensively - was another overpaid bottom 6. Jones.
Mason Raymond added a lot of speed and goal scoring ability... buy out.
Lance Bouma was an expensive re-signing - heart and soul player who put up 17 goals, was fantastic on the penalty kill, loved in the room, and a complete warrior on the ice. Bought out.
Flames were smart to move on from Nystrom.
You just don't overpay for 4th line roles. It is great that Treliving is staying away from the 6x6 contracts, but what is the point of staying away from those contracts if you fill your bottom 6 with high-priced players?
I am 100% fine with Ryan - though with some reservations. I just don't want Calgary to be paying both term and dollars for what should be essentially a 4th liner with PK ability. Be wary of guys who get too much opportunity somewhere, and thinking it will translate to another team. He will be useful, I have no doubt, but if we are paying market value (or even just below that) for his production in Carolina, we are bound to be disappointed and left with a higher priced 4th liner.

Yeah it would be brutal to have him break out there.
I personally want to keep Bennett but also think we need to get another top 6 winger and with rumors they are not going after big fish in free agency who are the assets we can move to get that player? Kylington, Gillies/Rittich, Bennett, and maybe Jankowski if Lindholm plays centre.

Yeah I assumed this was a Derek Ryan thread which is why that stuck out. I don't think there's any doubt that Lindholm is a better player than Ferland. More versatile, well-rounded and playmaking ability as Ferland was just a shooter that was off and on. Lindholm is an upgrade in the top 6 over Ferland and Frolik for sure but we will have to wait and see if he has more upside than he's shown to date.

I assume since you can talk with agents and players during courting week you can also comment in the media in regards to interest.

Ferland is 26, Lindholm 23. We will probably see some progression with Lindholm, but Ferland is already in his prime. I don't mind the trade-off of getting younger, as long as the cap hit turns out to be reasonable.
In any case, I would place a bet that beginning in the coming season, Lindholm will perennially outscore Ferland.
As far as Ryan goes, I would be fine with him centering the 4th line, as long as the cap hit is consistent with that role, although I fear he may get third line dollars.

Not only are they allowed to comment on interest, but they are even allowed to phone pending UFA's (and their agents) and flat out ask if they want to sign with them.
