Flames are more desperate to fill their Bottom 6 at this point than their top 6.
Anything that pushes Lazar and Hathaway out of the lineup is a net positive.
to re-iterate, Lazar scored just 2 goals in 65 games last year.

Do we not agree that the bottom 6 was a big problem with the Flames last year? Seems like adding guys who have produced in that role is a good thing.

I don't think lindholm is a Peters guy judging by twitter and the way he had to move around constantly in the lineup last few years.
I think Ryan is fine, but don't want to see an overpay

The Flames weren't good last year, but has a pretty good group of very good players.

Yeah, what if the Flames acquired ROR, Risto and Reinhart from Buffalo. Would people say "meh - they are from a crap team".

The answer to your question is Elias Lindholm. I would prefer to see Lindholm carry on at C and fill the top line with Tkachuk. That leaves plenty of C for the remaining lines.
Bennett had similar numbers as Ryan last year on an extremely down year.
Jankowski could fill that void as he had more goals and saw much less ice time (11:30)
Ryan averages 15 minutes per game over the last 2 seasons at 57%
Outside of the clear #1 in Sean Monahan the flames have a few options depending on what line you slot Ryan in at.
Mikael Backlund 50%
Sam Bennett 54%
Mark Jankowski 49%
Matt Stajan 52%
Nick Shore 45%
Curtis Lazar (R) 40%
Elias Lingholm (R) 55%

Yeah, but last year there were a bunch of older guys in the bottom 6. Not young guys like the poster was referring to. Stajan, Brouwer, Versteeg etc.

I agree that I'd rather see young guys take bottom 6 spots. Problem is, none have been good enough
Poirer had his chance and was never good enough. Lazar, Hathaway, Lomberg, F. Hamilton, Mangiapane and Klimchuk were all not good enough and need to be improved on if we're going to be a playoff team
Jankowski took his shot and showed he's NHL calibre. Foo looked good and I hope he makes the bottom 6. Klimchuk and Mangiapane will get their chance
I'm good with bringing in Ryan because the entire bottom 6 needs improvement, and Ryan alone scored more goals than all of Stajan, Hathaway, Lazar, F. Hamilton, Glass, Jagr, Hrivik, Shore, Stewart, Klimchuk and Lomberg COMBINED

Top 10 faceoff guy in the league
I think he's a perfect 4th line center/3rd maybe depending on what we end up with.
|
There is no reason he should be leapfrogging a guy like Jankowski or eating into his ice time at all. Ryan has been logging over 2 min of pp a time a game under Peters and also played over 15 min a game.....There is no reason he should ever see that kind of usage again given the depth down the middle we have.
If you want to bring him in as a safety net and a guy who can win some draws, that's fine. But his numbers are going to fall along with his ice time and based on this alone, his value shouldn't be much more than a 1.5 AAV for 2 years for the Flames.

Worst bottom six forward group in the league last year.
Flames look to add a bottom six C who scored 15 goals and 38 points last year, won 56% of his face offs, is a right hand shot (bonus), can skate really well and has good underlying possession stats.
Flames fans: Why are we trying to sign this guy?
Uh, maybe so we don't have to suffer through another year of Lomberg, Hathaway, Stajan, Brouwer and Lazar types fumbling through another season of NOT scoring any goals tohelp the team win maybe?
Just a guess.

Why do people say Ferland scores more than Lindholm? Ferland is getting 20 goals every year now? Doubtful.
I mean sure if you only look at goals last year yes Ferland had 21 to Lindholm's 16.
Lindholm has had more points than Ferland every single year, is 3 years younger, right hand shot. Ferland is a dime a dozen type player, crash and bang winger. Lindholm is a top 6 forward, and projects to be a pretty good one.
Surely nobody in the hockey world expects Ferland to outscore Lindholm going forward.

Flames need to do more this summer than acquire 3 Hurricanes players and their coach.
I am okay with the 3 players but more needs to be done

The impression I get is that Peters likes Lindholm quite a bit but its the player that was irked by constantly jumping around the lineup. He wanted more stability, consistency.
So really a coach being a coach and a player being a player. They'll be fine here.

So the solution is to bring in another 30+ year old vet like Brouwer who they already pay $4.5 million to score 6 goals? This guy is going to get overpaid and I would prefer they get a legit top 6 guy that bumps another player from the current top 6 to bottom six to address that issue rather than overpay for bottom six talent.

Bottom 6 of Stajan, Brouwer, Versteeg, Glass, etc wasn't going to them anywhere. Flames need to have a quick young bottom 6 this year and if Brouwer is staying he should be the only slow old one.

Yeah - especially since he's probably only going to command something like 2 years at $2.5M per year.
Another RH shot for the second PP unit as well.
I'd have no issue with them signing him as extra depth.

Ryan and Brouwer have almost nothing in common.
Brouwer was a poison pill prior to his signing
Ryan drives the play forward and is a high end face-off guy.
Two completely different players.
