6 actually. Monahan, Lindholm, Lazar, Shinkaruk, Poirier, Klimchuk.

I don't think Ferland is the type to get paid and quit. I just think he's a 1.5-2m player at best, and if you pay him more than that, he stops being valuable to the team. He doesn't drive his own line, and his battering ram style of play is too intense for a real person to sustain over six months plus playoffs.
Ferland is awesome. I hope he scores 30 in Carolina. He won't but I hope he does. And I hope he gets paid. He's a beauty. But whoever pays him is going to spend the rest of that contract trying to move it.

Come on now. Ferland brings so many more intangibles than good ol Rene. If Ferland puts up another 20 goal season then you absolutely pay him.
As it stands now we are going to be paying Lindholm 5 a year and hes never hit 20 despite playing 125 more games than Ferland.

Remember, Hamilton's acquisition upstaged McDavid's draft night. Part of that was Treliving's opportunism, part of it was Chiarelli's incompetence, but another part of it was 'we need someone who can play against McDavid for the next decade'.
Whatever you want to say about Hanifin, I don't think it's arguable that he has AT LEAST as much potential as Dougie, if not more. He's a 21 year old with three NHL seasons.

Wasn't it Brodie who got torched by McDavid more often?

Bill peters must have really wanted these guys and must have did a hell of a sell job to Brad, Craig all the scouts etc.
This is like Glen getting certain players ( Bartkowski, other ex Canucks)
I guess Fox didn’t want to be here so??? Ferland ???! Wow we invested allot of time and patience into him and you don’t just replace Ferland.
Hamilton? Had unrealized potential is all I hear but I wonder.
If this team fails to at the very least compete then I’ll be upset. If they do well then I’ll obviously be happy.
I feel right now we won’t have answers until 25-30 games into the season so patience, more patience will be required of all of us in the fan base.
Watching highlights of Hanafin and Lindholm they look like decent players .
Both of these players look quick, have soft hands , hard accurate shots as well.
I like this shakeup and will wait before I criticize, condemn and complain.

This feels like a good hockey trade all around. Any deal that has really blown up on us in the past always seems to have my initial reaction to being negative. Actually had the opposite feeling on this one. We did give up to get for sure but all around I like this for the Flames. Team clearly needed a shake up, they bring in some pieces that make sense to address some needs, and get younger in the process.
Amazing given how good Dougie’s numbers are just how indifferent I was to his departure hearing the news. Which is weird cause I do like his game. While I’ll admit I’d prefer it was Brodie, he wouldn’t get this deal done and Hanifin coming back just seems to make it even easier to swallow. Ferland is the part of the deal I like the least but I think that’s more to do with his likeable style and story than anything else.

It was all of them. Brodie's is the most famous, but none of the top three have been able to handle McDavid since he got into the league. It's irritating.

How isn't he a throw in? Carolina is resting on the intriguing possibility that he will sign with them, but in reality he can just spite them as he did Calgary and go on his merry way to free agency. His track record for reliability isn't in the best shape as it stands.

Ferland is really getting thrown under the bus now that hes traded.
There really aren't many players like him in the NHL and nobody actually knows what his ceiling may be.
|
There are lots of players like Ferland in the league...... they just dont get top line minutes due to lack of depth on the RW like Ferland.

Heck, he can be signed by Calgary (I think, unless there's some sort of CBA impediment).

What does Fox have left to prove in NCAA? Why not make the jump to pro? Was it because he doesn't want to play in Calgary?

I think losing Ferland is the biggest thing I'm unhappy about. IMO he was a guy that was worth more to the team than his value in a trade. Having a guy who can fill a spot in the top-6 without needing to spend a huge amount of assets and money is really valuable.
He could be a good fit on a line with some of Carolina's smaller skilled forwards like Aho or Terevainen, playing a similar role to what he did here.
I'm also very curious to see what happens with Hamilton. I think Slavin could play the Giordano role if they needed someone to babysit him in his own zone, but I doubt they break up their top pair of Slavin-Pesce. I think we'll learn in a hurry where Hamilton's defensive game is in Carolina if he's on the second pair with a mediocre partner.

I'm not as high on Hamilton as many here are. I have liked Hanafin since he was drafted. I don't think it will hurt our D at all. I liked Ferland, but he is a bottom 6 player and would not be playing on the first line on many teams in the NHL. We have a lot of depth on D prospects so we can afford to trade Fox. Remember - he hasn't done anything at the NHL level yet. So, overall, I like the trade. I think this is an improvement for the team.

I feel so bad for Gaudreau and Monahan who have to waste away their careers until UFA

This trade brought back another talented forward, that the team severely needs. Gaudreau and Monahan are probably stoked.
