Very disappointing to hear this about Fox. Maybe time to stop minimizing the risk of drafting college players. Flames got very little value for such an excellent prospect.
Other than the logjam of D Alex Fox would have to go through to earn a spot, I can't see any other reasons Fox would forgo signing. His fellow American bredren Tkachuk and Gaudreau in the mix and his age to boot. If he doesn't think he can outcompete Valimaki and Andersson for a spot then that raises questions about his attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes. Bye Felicia!
Brad brought up Ferland being a year away from UFA. Reading between the lines (which you have to do with Treliving) it sounds like maybe the Flames weren’t optimistic they could keep Ferland long term on a deal they thought was reasonable.
Outside of Calgary, mostly in the East, they are calling this an even trade with Fox as a complete wild card. Can't say I disagree, I like Hanifin better than Hamilton and Lindholm better than Ferland, so Fox is just the price you pay.

It was a well brought up concern brought up on the Fan the past couple of weeks. If he was going to have another 20g season he was likely going to price himself off the team.

At least his representation was honest and didn't wait until the last minute like Erixon. He gave Treliving two summers to deal with it before he was a free agent in the third summer.
It's not his fault Brad used him as a throw in.
Exactly, I wish they'd close that loophole but until they do Fox handled this as well as we could hope. He let us know with lots of time and didn't make any public comments to force our hand.

Only one forward who had more hits than Ferland had more goals than Ferland in the entire NHL last year.
Dustin Brown who made $6.5M last year. Ferland makes $1.75M.
Ferland is really getting thrown under the bus now that hes traded.
There really aren't many players like him in the NHL and nobody actually knows what his ceiling may be.
Ferland was a terrific player for us and his potential is still huge, but his game is very jekyll and hyde at times. He scored almost 20 goals in the first half and then just 2-3 in the second half of the season. Defensively, he’s still a major work in progress and the fact that he was a UFA next year, I’m not surprised we moved him. We’ll certainly miss him, but who knows, maybe we can try to re-sign him next summer.

Something else to consider: the Flames have been absolutely appalling at defending Connor McDavid since he entered the league. I don't know how much of that is on Gulutzan. I assume at least a little.
Yet I cannot help but wonder if Brad watched Dougie play McDavid for three years, look completely overmatched each time, and simply concluded that he wasn't the guy we hoped he was.
Remember, Hamilton's acquisition upstaged McDavid's draft night. Part of that was Treliving's opportunism, part of it was Chiarelli's incompetence, but another part of it was 'we need someone who can play against McDavid for the next decade'.
Whatever you want to say about Hanifin, I don't think it's arguable that he has AT LEAST as much potential as Dougie, if not more. He's a 21 year old with three NHL seasons.

I am not sure why people feel getting 2 top 5 picks from the last 5 years is little value. These are good players that are still very young.
I’d really like it if Tre could clear out one more Dman to make room for Andersson, he’s ready. Trading Brodie now would be selling low and I need to see Brodano again. If Hamonic or Stone could be traded for something of quality I’d love a D corps of:
Gio-Brodie
Hanifin-Stone/Hamonic
Kulak-Andersson
With Valimaki and Kylington as dark horses to steal a spot in camp.

If you would have told me we would have Both Monahan AND Lindholm at that draft, I'd have called you crazy.
Yet here we are and I am a very happy fan today.
Flames now have 5 players from round one of that draft. Crazy. Maybe Treliving should work out a deal to bring back Nuchishkin. Or somehow steal Mantha from Detroit.
