Technically speaking we got the All-Star defenseman out of the trade.

Even if Dougie HAD to go, I don't understand why Ferland was included. He was perfect depth and in my eyes the most threatening physical presence of any skilled player in the league.
Ferland is exactly the guy you want to fill out the top 9, he's what Brouwer was paid $18 million to do.
Thank god he's in the East though.

Absolutely hate moving Hamilton out but Hanifin is an extremely smart player and believe it or not even a better skater than Dougie. at 20 yrs old he lead a very good group of Carolina defenseman in scoring.
Ferland was frustrating to me, didn't play physical enough, nor did he use that big right hand against some idiots trying to take liberty's on our skilled players, he was very inconsistent and a total product of playing top line minutes. another 20+ goals he was going to either walk or make far too much money next year.
Hate loosing Adam Fox as well.

Flames dealt from a position of strength to address some deficiencies in the forward group. They didn't address all the problems, but the deal goes to shoring up the offensive output.
Hamilton was clearly a problem.
Brodie goes back to the right side. The Flames improve offensively. They avoid a Bouma situation where they're paying a bottom 6 forward big money to not doing anything in Ferland.
They hold onto all of their most NHL ready defensive prospects. They don't let a situation progress to an Erixon type last minute nail biter.
Hanifin is the better player as compared to Hamilton right now IMO.
I love this trade.

To be fair hits is almost completely useless as a statistic. Ferland wasn't nearly the physical offensive presence we wanted him to be on the first line.

The Peters factor in this deal can't be overstated. He knows these two players better than anyone, their strengths, weaknesses, and potential. And the fact he okayed this deal - maybe even pushed for it - shows he's happy to have them on his roster

I think the flames slightly lost this deal, by the value of Ferland. The other four players balance out and I’d imagine most would be content with..
Lindholm + Hanifin = Hamilton + Fox
That seems like a fair trade to me
But what’s Ferland worth?
- First half of season 17/18, a second round draft pick.
- Second half of the season, a fifth round draft pick
So IMHO if the flames got Carolinas third/fourth round pick in next years draft included with that deal, then I think it would have been even.
We’ve basically given Ferland away for nothing, which I’m not going to jump off a bridge about!

I am liking this trade more and more. Hanifin has a ton of potential and we will probably lock him up long term at a reasonable number. Lindholm’s best days are ahead and like many Swedes he will breakout in his mid 20’s and we will also have him locked up for the next 5+ years.
Fox didn’t want to sign here and staying at Harvard makes it easy for him to go UFA. Ferland was going to want a 4-5 year deal at $4-5M and he is too inconsistent. Dougie is a great player but clearly something is up. The whole brother thing was strange and if they were shopping him for the past 18-20 months there was obviously something behind the scenes because he is a great player.
I think the team is overall better today. I think Brodie will rebound playing with Gio and I really think the Hanifin-Hamonic pairing is going to be really solid.
