Not drafting in the first three rounds means you have just about zero chance of adding a regular. You can still be a Flames fan and openly admit this result was a serious #$%$ up by Flames management.

The real question is whether you would have landed a player that would have had the same amount of impact on the team as both Smith and Hamonic. Unless they were drafting in the top 5, that is unlikely to be the case. I did think the Hamonic trade was an overspend, but that was and still is the going price for a top 4 defenceman, and the focus of management was clearly to forego some futures in order to win now. There may have even some fear that the Oilers would actually develop into a perennial contender once McDavid hit his prime. There was clearly a miscalculation about how ready they were to win last year.
Still, the core of this team going forward and all of their top prospects are 20-25 years old. Their window to win is in the next five years. Unless any addition is expected to have an immediate impact on the team, that addition will not impact the current window to win.
Six to ten years from now, the team will suck, with its prospects depleted and its core aging and expensive. At that point, they should blow it up and go for the draft lottery.

I can't wait for the flames first pick, if only to out an end to the Hamonic rehashing and change the conversation to some pessimism around a new flames asset and some complaints around alternative options.

Oh, the ride doesn’t end here, friend. Something tells me there will be a lot of hand wringing about any success from Dobson and whoever else the Islanders pick in round 2 for years to come.

Only if the Flames continue to screw the pooch on the ice. Winning heals all.

Isn't that what GMs do before they put together a trade?

I'm sick of media rumormongers after yesterday. The media should frankly be ashamed of how much they trumped up yesterday's draft day for literally nothing to happen. They were either completely used or complicit in making me waste my Friday night away either way any respect I have left has evaporated. Shills all around.
At least eklund knows he's a useless fool. Do you think Friedman and dreger respect themselves still?

Think about all the players we could have drafted if we didn’t have the players we have now!

Isn’t that what GMs that know each other do when they’re confined to one area in the early morning with nothing else to do. They could be talking about the eggs at the complimentary hotel breakfast.

Yeah right -- it's "The Media's" fault you tune into clearly unsubstituted nonsense.

Trade: treliving trades a piece of canadian bacon to Hextall for a poached egg and the rights to use the salt.
