Figured he'd end up on a sunbelt team. Less of a fishbowl.

I am getting a little sick of hearing about the Flames focusing in on "character" to build their team. So far "character" hasn't amounted to a hill of beans. The "character" guys they've invested in have been massive flops. I wouldn't mind a guy that is a little nuts, so long as he scores 30 goals, is a plus player, and helps the team get deep in the playoffs.

I think Calgary is on a ton of players no trade list. Would not surprise me to see Hoffman have the Flames on it either.
With the Arena debacle that happened last fall. Uncertainty floating that the team will be around. The coaching carousel and the fact they really haven't done much in the playoffs for a long time. I can see a lot of the players that Tre would like to target, have us on the no trade list.

^^I doubt it and the Sharks did not want him either. He ends up with another one of the NHLs dysfunctional teams, a good fit.

Reading between the lines only slightly, that pretty much translates to "we traded down in talent because he was a cancer and was messing up the team."

Unfortunately, I think you are right. It could just be luck, but the Flames have become a graveyard for free agents and trade acquisitions. It seems like every player that we acquire that we haven't drafted ends up leaving the Flames without a career. It may just be due to the Flames' propensity to acquire reclamation projects, but players around the league must be noticing this.
The only exception to this rule is Hamilton, but every other player on the roster that the Flames have acquired is going to have a tough time finding an NHL position after leaving the team.
Hoffman has 2 years to put up big numbers before singing a new contract. Calgary, last season, showed that they have an ultra rigid offensive system that stifles talent. If Hoffman comes in and puts up less than 50 points, it's a huge blow to his career and potential earnings.

Personally.
I think its for the best for Mike. He can get his career back on track by staying out of the spotlight for a year or two in Florida. Media probably won't be as toxic as it is up here or in the bigger NHL cities.

I don't really think this is true. Who besides Brouwer and waiver fodder don't/won't have contracts after they leave the Flames?

And his fiancee "allegedly" sending thousands of social media posts from a burner account to cyber bully a teammates wife won't even be the weirdest thing to happen in Florida in a week. Probably won't even make top ten in any given week in the year. It's the loonie bin of America.

Florida sounds like the perfect place for Hoffman and his girlfriend. That place does crazy right.

Honest question, but do players really not want to live in Calgary?
If a player signs here, how much time are they really spending in Calgary? If they want sandy beaches they have plenty of time and money to do whatever they want during their break.
As an outsider, I think Calgary is a phenomenal city. Honestly, my fiancé's job is the only reason I'm not looking at being there today. Snow and the gripes you can have about the municipality are factors for sure, but I think players put a lot of value in community and the team's chances to win. They'll talk to players past and present about what living in Calgary is like, and it's reasonable to think that people have some great things to say about Calgary.
- The community and the people in that city are wonderful
- You're a quick drive from one of the most beautiful places on Earth
- Your passion, hockey, is at a fever pitch when the team is going well
- There are a lot of great neighbourhoods and schools players would have great things to talk about
- Being a Calgary Flame star in Calgary in the SCF would be one of the best feelings on Earth. I don't know if you feel that too much outside of the rink in Florida.
The flashing lights in NY and the beaches of California are attractive to be sure - but I don't know that is a make-or-break for most players. They can get their fill of sandy beaches when they're not focused on work.

If we keep excusing everything on mental illness, she is the kind of person who becomes the disease' face. When that happens, sympathy dissipates very quickly from a place it's very much warranted.

Mental illness is an excuse.
I hope what you mean is that people are claiming "mental illness" when in fact none may exist.

Calgary's is a phenomenal city for living but in terms of a NHL franchise. It's not that tempting IMO.
The team hasn't been anywhere close to winning a Stanley cup since 04. They seem to just be a middle of the pack team and will continue to be one, like I said earlier the stability of the franchise is uncertain right now. We haven't really made any progress in terms of being a cup contender.
Until this team goes deep into a playoff run & sorts out the arena crap. We'll never be a hot commodity for UFAs.
Also I don't think the Canadian Media/Scrutiny from Fans the players go through up here is worth it compared to California Teams.

i think every city has pockets that make them very livable, even if outside of that bubble, things might not be as great...during the course of the year, you'd think there wouldn't be a ton of off time anyways.
with the amount of money these players have, its true that you don't have to live in the same place following the season.
having kids does add complication, one would think, as their school years don't necessarily dovetail with the NHL regular season...so finding the right situation/school system for your kids would also be really important i would guess.
oddly enough, i saw a news report of Eberle living in calgary (he was doing the father's day run in support of prostate cancer research) in the off season... so i am sure there are a number of NHLers that do live in around the area... but many also have summer homes in kelowna...

Oh yeah, if there more of the same I don't think many want to be a part of that.
But I wonder if the difference makers like Tavares see things differently and look at what the team would be around him. I don't think it's too unappealing to think of what his line-mates would look like, and there's a good group of D back there. It's not too much of a stretch to think that Tavares would be a huge step towards contending.
That arena issue will concern Tavares more than most UFAs in the past though. Can't imagine he'll go from NYI to somewhere having problems of their own.

I was thinking about the school schedule as well.
I think school gets out in June/July, so that would be a good annual vacation (along with the bye-week) to be with family somewhere sunny. But I could be very wrong about how those schedules align.
Interesting to hear about Eberle. I don't blame him!

Re: is Calgary a destination. I would think that fan scrutiny on social media is a huge deterrent. I know that I wouldn't move to a Canadian market for fear of being harassed by fans after a bad game. Just reading the comments on any Matt Stajan related material is all the evidence you need of how spiteful Canadian fans can be.
