The Penguins were confident enough in the offer they were shocked by the Coyotes trade with Montreal.
I'm sure they had a deal with the Coyotes until Bergeron offered Galchenyuk, and then Chayka was 'start the car, start the car!' before Bergeron could change his mind.

I don't know how they could be shocked, given that you'd think the GM would've at least asked if they were willing to up their offer before accepting the Montreal trade.

There were reports that another team had inside track on Drouin until Bergeron threw down Sergachev. Maybe when he gets his sight on a player he will do anything not to lose the trade to another team. Lets hope he has his eyes set on Brodie or Stone.

Once Galychuck was offered I highly doubt he went back to Pitt to see what they would do. He probably wanted that paper work to be done as quick as possible.

Based on offensive talent Brouwer should have never been on the powerplay when our team was healthy. Tkachuk and Ferland were both better at his role. Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Bennett, Jankowski and Jagr have better offensive skill and touch than Brouwer. He should never have been in consideration for a PP spot at all this year. GG obviously had to take him of the PP at some point but he should never have been there at all, that's the point.

You can try to explain it away all you want, it doesn't really change things. Brouwer got opportunities over the last two years he didn't earn based on his on-ice play but strictly because of his salary. Fans resented him for it and its no surprise that some players did as well. They aren't blind, they have a great view from the bench.
I could just imagine the players sitting together talking about this; Have to admit at times last season there were some very uninspired efforts against struggling teams. I know injuries were a factor, but there were many times I thought we played well enough to lose. Vegas got their team to focus on something exciting the focus became a goal, and a team destiny. Putting
Brouwer in ahead of some of these young guys becomes a distraction of sorts especially when your team is losing. When you add in the coaches doing the same things over and over even when it is not working, this is not a very inspiring approach. It becomes discouraging and shakes team confidence. At some point the players have to wonder, "do these coaches know what they are doing?". Take the stick throw, the team showed they could play to win if they really wanted to for a stretch but then mailed it in when it really mattered.

I have a hunch that the players knew before the end of the season the coach was getting tanked. Just too many efforts down the stretch seemed mailed in and key losses to struggling teams. We hardly saw any players apologizing for the coach getting canned which was telling.

I will say that lack of effort didn't seem to sit well with Gio or Matthew Tkachuk.

As a player the biggest thing i'd want to know is if i outplayed the guy ahead of me on the depth chart consistently i'd get a chance to move up the depth chart or get rewarded another way like pp time. If i got outplayed while in that role i would understand why the coach would move me out of that role or back down the line up.

As a coach if you can't find a way to make an adjustment in your line up to reward good play it hurts your whole team. This in my mind is where the majority of the failure of the GG coaching staff lies. Just kept trotting out the same lines over and over again regardless of how the players played.

Interesting hearing a Toronto radio station this morning, and that Karl Alzner being a buyout candidate is an old conversation in the east. It would never happen, because it would mean the end to Bergevin so soon after the signing.

This might sound crazy, but with Montreal absolutely desperate for an established center, would losing Backlund leave too big a hole on the roster?

Backlund, Stone, Brouwer
For
Alzner, Gallagher, 2nd

Alzner is making 4.625 for the next 4 years.

Every bodies favourite eklund saying flames are leading the charge in acquiring Skinner.

Yes it's eklund , so let's keep the "can't believe people post eklund rumours" to a minimum. If you don't like eklund don't respond. Basically me and "Vinny01" will discuss this. Lol

I'd be happy to get skinner, although I suspect his cost might be prohibitive. He's the kind of guy I see a team trading their first for at the draft.

I think they are going to be trading out a bunch of players. Rumours are hanifin is on his way out. Could Brodie for skinner happen?

If Canes fans are to be believed, Skinner + Peters were not a good combo.

Would rather Lindholm if we're picking apart the canes.

i doubt he leaves the Caps, but i think Kempny is a UFA... he really showed well during the playoffs and could be a solid pick up for someone.

Skinner, you gotta wonder what he has in the tank, but if the price is right, maybe he can have a bit of a renaissance a la Staal... the thing about upside is that some times players never hit it, but they are valuated at that level...

I don't see how we can get Skinner. We have no draft picks and the Canes are built almost the same as the Flames. They have a bunch of good defensemen and very few good forwards.

Peters and Skinner were like Nuts and Gum apparently. I highly doubt they would pick him up.

Skinner can veto any trade with his full NMC and is 1 year from UFA. That should limit his trade value some.

The Flames and Canes don't seem like probably trade partners
They have similar needs and surpluses.

Skinner would be nice, but I think other players make more sense. He could attractive as a UFA, but probably not now.

Skinner is also a left hand shot left winger... something we have way too much of already..

I see a Bennett for lindholm trade being a possibility and it would fill the 2nd RW hole and we could probably sign Lindholm to a reasonable contract which would allow for another RW free agency signing or allow for us to trade Brodie + for that top line RW hole.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal/Lindholm/Trade For RW
Tkachuk - Jankowski - Neal/Lindholm/Trade for RW
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik
Mangiapane - Lazar - Foo
Brouwer

Giordano - Hamilton
Kulak - Hamonic
Andersson - Stone
Kylington

Something like that would look quite decent going forward
