Man, I’m trying really hard but I just can’t kick finding it really boring to watch a whole match. Highlights are great though. Are there any tips or something any of you fanatics can give to help change that mindset?

You have to have a team to cheer for. If you're just watching two teams in a meaningless match you're not going to enjoy it.
Find a team and cheer for them. You'll love the ups and downs.
Oh! And find a team to hate. I would nominate England because they almost never disappoint by always disappointing and their fans are hilarious.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

I’m a free agent. Who should I cheer for and why? Preferably a team who doesn’t dive everywhere. England now locked in for the team to hate. And whoever Suarez plays for.

In some ways being neutral is more fun because you don't care who wins, you just want to see chances.

Gonna be tough to find you a team since you ruled out one of the better fits for your criterion.
Maybe Australia, since they sort of hate the English, but then you'd just be cheering for a bunch of English criminals. Maybe Japan's sense of honour extends to their football team?

The thing about soccer is that there are a lot of subtle tactical things going on. Try and watch the defending, the momentum shifts, the personal battles, the counter attacks, etc.
North American sports are generally centred around the idea of goals=excitement=good. And while goals are obviously exciting and good, the build-up and scarcity of chances puts so much more weight on each one.
But I'll be the first to admit that, while I have seen some entertaining 0-0 and 1-0 matches, seeing Portugal and Spain go back and forth today for 6 goals was an easy one to get sucked into.

Hate England? Who else gives us consistent comedy gold like England? I mostly pity their fans actually.
Sadly, being an England fan has been good training for being a Flames fan
One win from a long time ago is all we have to cling to along with the odd almost there including a bad call on a goal/no-goal but mainly inept management ....
