When fans here talk optimistically about a team like the Avalanche turning things around in a hurry, and maybe the Flames can follow suit, we should acknowledge that the biggest change in the Avalanche was team culture. Addition by subtraction. It wouldn't surprise me to see something similar happen with the Flames this off-season.

You just described every Flames team led by Jarome Iginla post 2004. Nobody remembers how that team constantly folded when faced with adversity? Those were veterans teams to boot. This is a young team without much quality veteran leadership outside of Giordano. Treliving tried to address that with Brouwer but that backfired. It’s just going to take time for the group to figure it out and hopefully this new coaching staff can help fill some leadership void like Darryl Sutter when he took over a rudderless group of young players. The Flames don’t have a disgruntled core player like the Avs did do I simply don’t see any parallel there. I think you are going to be disappointed as outside of maybe Brodie I don’t see much change to any of the core players on this team.

Ek saying JT will visit Vancouver in 5 day window . Oddly I don't think he is wrong . I could see Vancouver going all out getting JT and trading for Karlson.

My immediate thought was :
two way top nine LW (Frolik)
middle pair defenseman (Brodie)
maybe a prospect (Shinkaruk)
It sounds like they arn't expecting an add-on of Bennett or Kylington stature. The Penguins are trying to even out the distribution of talent, and Kessel is the high price ticket that they have to dangle. I wasn't on the Kessel train before, but if that's all it takes, I'm on board now.

Aside from the automatic disclaimer of that source being a click-bate know-nothing monkey in the fist place...
Why would Tavares, who - if he leaves NYI is doing so because it's a perennial loser - be interested in going to another team where he'd spend the rest of his prime years with no hope of making or contending in the playoffs?
People who suggest this because of Vancouver's cap space are completely devoid of this very basic conundrum.
That is just the spinning-wheel-monkey trying to garner web clicks.

Why would JT want to go there though? Even if they landed him and Karlsson they are still a bottom feeder for probably at least three more years. The Islanders are much closer to winning than Vancouver.

What absolute rubbish.

Easy now. Don't get me wrong. I like Gaudreau, but my point was he could be traded and i would be OK with that - assuming its a kings ransom in return. i do think he is one of the players targeted by management as having a 'care' problem. That may or may not be justified ... but he does go through stretches when he is somewhat invisible and this team also has a long spiteful memory ... and so don't underestimate the possibility ownership will single him out and direct that he be traded simply because of his holdout.
The Magic Man was also our leading scorer and main offensive threat in the early 1980s, and he had a 'care' problem.

While he very likely has no intention of signing in Vancouver, that hardly prevents him from visiting with them and listening to what they envision him on their squad and at what rate of compensation.
It's a chance to increase leverage for himself, why wouldn't he visit and have a chat?
Maybe his wife (if he has one) wants to live on the West Coast?
There are multitudes of reasons guys factor into their decisions, and no one except them know what those are.

I know some people hate it, but the amount that Gaudreau gets mad at the refs or gets mad to himself on the bench shows he cares. He gets pretty emotional over big goals. I'd be shocked if management thought he was part of the problem.

A Brodie for Kessel deal makes sense for both teams.
Kessel is exactly what we need.

If all it takes is Brodie + Kylington/Fox to get Kessel here you obviously do it.

Did you even see the "source" of this rumour?
What you just said amounts to "he could meet with and listen to any team, we don't know". Agreed.
That has nothing to do with their being a shred of truth to that notion because (won't even say his name) tossed it out there for clicks.

Kessell has two cups and is used to playing with the likes of Crosby and Malkin. I see a lot of decline in his game if he ends up here. No thanks.

I doubt Kessel would include Calgary on his trade list. Being in Canada, in a highly critical market with lots of media and fan engagement is probably not something he wants heading into the twilight of his career.

If Kessell's asking price is "a two-way, top-nine left wing, a middle-pair defenseman and maybe a prospect" then I think we go for it:
Frolik, Stone (retain salary), Klimchuk could be a start.
It's more likely that Brodie would have to be involved but would Pittsburgh want 8.6 million in salary coming back the other way?

for all this talk about Hamonic being best buds with JT... Gagner is his childhood friend...
I could totally see JT in Vancouver adding up all the factors that he might consider
Market/City
Fan base/Attention
Money
Familiarity
It would be neat tho
Mcdavid,Drai,RNH vs Tavares,Pettersson,Boeser,Horvat vs Gaudreau,Monaham,Tkachuk

I think people are forgetting how much Tavares loves NYI. If he leaves, it’s not because of the city, the people, the money, familiarity, etc, it’s to go to an organisation that has a chance to win.
It would be a huge slap in the face to NYI fans to leave their dumpster fire just to sign with a different one, and I really don’t think Tavares has any interest in that.
If Tavares leaves, he’s going to a solid team with a chance to win. He’s not going to a team just because they have cap room.
