I think there is always an aura around celebrity, sports and entertainment icons that is just completely false. Many of these people end up head down, working non stop for decades and then suddenly realize they've lost friends, family and time along the way. I find that the majority of these celebrities we hear about committing suicide have at one point or another voiced displeasure or remorse for never being home, living their own lives etc. and it has to take a serious toll mentally. Bourdain was no different and even bluntly honest about his failings with addiction, marriage, parenting.
This is truly sad as he was one of the most genuine celebrity's out there and offered some truly unique material to the world that he did not comprise. Unfortunate he was not able to get the help he needed.

With Bourdain and with Spade, that's two celebrity suicides inside of a week that leave young children without one of their parents, that's the tragedy here.
It also shines a spotlight that whoever you are, however many dollars you have in the bank, no matter how big your house is, or how much people love you, Depression and anxiety disorders can make that all meaningless.
For Spade her husband came out and said she'd been battling depression and anxiety for a while, I'm sure we'll see stories like this with Bourdain in the coming days.
If you're feeling depressed, exhausted, anxious, angry or just feel like the world would be better off without you, right now, push away from the keyboard, and go talk to a professional, if you're not comfortable sharing it with people that you know because of the stigma attached to mental illness, go talk to a professional. Don't try to ignore it, don't think that it will go away without intervention. Just do it.
As tragic as these suicides are, if something positive can come out of them in terms of people realizing how all encompassing these illnesses are and it forces them to go help, then at least something good will come out of something horrible.

He chose a controversial way to go. I get the debate here. I have struggled with what my friend did everyday for 10 years. Back and forth with anger and sadness, hate and acceptance.
Everyone deals with it their own way. I am not mad at any of the posts here. Their really a reflection of what happens to families and friends of the one who left.
It is extremely devisive event and we are all entitled to our feelings about it. No one is wrong here.

It doesn’t have to be ruined, continue talking about Anthony bourdain, I only voiced an opinion about one small aspect about him, I’m sure there was more to his life than the ending

Not just the 40 something traveler. I started traveling to Asia in my late 20's but I had no interest in the standard excursions or following the backpacker trail. I had much more fun immersing myself in the culture and food, meeting and partying with the locals, and occasionally getting completely wrecked. Bourdain connected with me so much because he had the life I wanted, and even our personalities were very similar (I also share his extreme hatred for karaoke). Nothing else to add except today now sucks

These aren’t mutually exclusive things. People dealing with mental health issues can still experience great joy, indulge, and truly love things around them.
He wasn’t ever selling a lifestyle, he was just a human being who showed people a whole different look at the world through a culinary lens.

I think I better go see Jimmy Buffett one day soon. My "three coolest men on the planet list" is down to just him now that Anthony Bourdain and Tom Petty are gone.
Sucks. Goes to show you can never tell what people are going through. If anyone seemed to have the world by the balls it was Bourdain. Sad, sad news.

Like usual your take is terrible. And unfortunately since Bourdain offed himself, we cant ask him about it.

Sad new about Bourdain. Always enjoyed his show and thought he lived a great life. I had no idea he had mental health issues.

The CBC included this at the end of their report on the story:
Quote:
Where to get help:
The toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL) at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 (Phone), Live Chat counselling at www.kidshelpphone.ca
Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention: Find a 24-hour crisis centre
Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS) (French): 1-866-APPELLE
If you're worried someone you know may be at risk of suicide, you should talk to them about it, says the Canadian Association of Suicide Prevention.
Here are some warning signs:
Suicidal thoughts.
Substance abuse.
Purposelessness.
Anxiety.
Feeling trapped.
Hopelessness and helplessness.
Withdrawal.
Anger.
Recklessness.
Mood changes.

I have compassion I feel bad for his 11 year old daughter and family. Because I don’t agree with suicide it’s obviously something to do with my problems? Lol keep trying to turn it around, it’s nothibg to do with anything else.
Religious people believe it’s a sin and you go to hell, does that make them bitter? Misguided maybe.
I get it, you disagree with my opinion. Don’t need to make it personal

opened this to remember Bourdain and the way he inspired me to see more of the world, only to find a fiery dumpster of a thread. can there be a separate generic suicide debate thread?

It's a shame you gave up on standing on your own two feet so long ago FG. Must be nice to just sit on your ass and judge someone without understanding what their struggles really are.

The only dumpster here is FG, but he seems to take pleasure in pissing all over an otherwise mournful and respectful thread

I was saddened and shocked when I saw the thread title just like most of you. I enjoyed the show he had, it was interesting and he was very knowledgeable. Seemed like a cool guy, hard to understand.

Ok, I'm no expert, I'm not a trained psychiatrist, but its funny because even when you have the feelings that your talking about here, you're pretty much unaware that your having those feelings, you learn to live with them until you can't live with them.
But these feelings become such a massive part of your day that its almost like trying to keep spiders in a box with holes. You keep trying to cram the spiders back in, and for a while your ok, but the spiders keep multiplying and eventually they get out.
If you know someone that your worried about, it will be like dealing with a buzz saw, and they will deny, they will get angry with you, and they will push away from you, and you will have to make choices in terms of what your going to do, but its important to look after your wellbeing while helping others.

Lmao I was waiting for the wheelchair Stab, I expect no less
My standing up for my opinions like a man prove otherwise, at least I don’t make a drive by post and run away, I’ll take the heat, I’m not a coward.
