The parent help thread
It seems as though I keep coming across scenarios that I am not quite sure what the norm is these days. Whether it's what to pay babysitters for short term vs longer hours or what to buy for birthday presents for other people's kids.
I figured that while I was making a thread to address my question of the day that it might be handy to have one thread dedicated to such questions where all parents could reference for advice on things that others might have a handle on.
My son is going to a birthday party tomorrow for twin 7 year old girls. The question that I have to solve tomorrow morning is what to buy them for presents. We have been to so many boys birthday parties that I can't remember how many, and buying for young boys is easy for me. As far as girl presents go I am at a total loss.

Some thoughts:
1. Girls do not necessarily like "girls toys". So buying the same types of gifts you would for boys will probably be fine.
2. Ask your son his thoughts on what these girls like
3. In the end, it does not matter much anyway since their parents will just re-gift any toys their children do not like.

^I was actually thinking that they might enjoy nerf guns as much as the boys do lol.

My wife usually polls my daughter’s friends’ mum on what the preferred gift would be. One trend that came up around the 7th/8th Birthday was LEGO friends. That is something you might want to consider. The other thing that was requested quite often was gift cards to Chapters

We always our kids to check with birthday kid what they would like, and we ask the parents if there is anything they don't want, and try to steer the gift purchase to somewhere inbetween.

My daughter is 7, in some ways girls that age can be fairly easy to buy for. LEGO friends, elves and superhero girls seem to be popular, some are obsessed with Beanie Boos, and craft-type things (e.g. make your own bracelets) always seem to be a hit.

as a father of twin girls, please treat the birthday girls as individuals, and not as one entity.
as for gifts, my girls would love the nerf guns and other fun toys. gender specific toys is an adult concept not shared by kids.

Costco has a kick-ass set of water guns right now. We have them (I have two girls) and they're awesome.

I might be alone in this, but I prefer not to buy kids gift cards. I think it's way better to give them an actual gift to open, and while I'm at it, gift bags are lame. Spend like 2 minutes and wrap the gift up.

My friend's daughter has a birthday coming up and I was thinking about Lego as a gift. Is Lego an alright present for a 4 yr old and if so, what type of sets should I be looking at? I'm guessing there are no Frozen themed sets.

As someone who has worked with four year olds for many, many years, Lego would be a great gift! It's the one toy everyone seems to like and if things are going crazy, I put it out and it gives everyone something productive to do. The boxes will tell you what age range, so you don't get something too simple or too hard (in general).
