Haven't heard an Eklund rumor in ages. Does he still put them out regularly and people just don't post them much anymore, or has he quit doing it as much?

He holds all the leverage here - what is Lou going to say "Go to the courting window and I'll never offer you a contract here again!" - no chance that happens so Tavares might as well wait and see what's there on

I honestly think he's done with them. He wants to win IMO, and the Isles were an 80 point team with him. He knows when he goes to free agency he is going to get a pile of money and be able to choose from at least a handful of 95+ point teams, and maybe even a couple 100+ point teams that are going to be that much better when he joins them.
Cripes, a bunch of folks think the Preds might go after him, and they won the President's trophy, and then use Turris or Johansen as trade bait if they get him.

I can really see that one happening - I think him and Subban are close friends, IIRC he's a big fan of country music, and who wouldn't want to live in that city. Plus in the bottom half from a tax perspective with only Florida/Texas being substantially better.
Sign Tavares as UFA
Trade Johansen for picks/prospects.
Profit.

If Lou trades Tavares' rights to the Leafs now, I call shenanigans.

The talk about it all being about playing with a winner is overblown. There are effectively three tiers of teams in the league:
4-5 teams that are likely to finish atop their conferences and make deep playoff runs. These teams almost never have the cap space to sign a player like Tavares. And teams rarely last longer than 3-4 seasons in this tier.
4-5 bottom-feeding teams that, due to tight-fisted owners or chronically bad management, are unlikely to turn around their fortunes anytime soon (though some, like Colorado, manage it).
The other 20 teams, teams that can make the playoffs in any given year and win a round or two, or miss the playoffs.
Sure, star players want to play for the top-tier teams. But it's very difficult to orchestrate a trade or or signing to them. And they want to avoid the bottom-tier teams, though a couple of them may just be at the bottom of rebuild and have a promising future.
But the great bulk of teams are essentially indistinguishable for a player looking to win the Cup. Is there really much difference between San Jose, St. Louis, NYI, Colorado, Calgary, and New Jersey when it comes to the likelihood of winning a Cup in the next 5-6 years?
Given the fact that most of the teams that will pitch offers to Tavares have more or less the same odds of winning, he's going to be looking at other factors to make his decision: city, climate, travel, coaches, line-mates.

Maybe it's unlikely if you interpret it in that specific way. I read it as the organization was on-board with keeping DW around to appease their star player, if that player was to re-sign. The organization now knows that he will be going to free agency, ending the Tavares-era in NY.
As such there's no point in keeping DW and Snow around, better to start fresh as the team moves forward in a new direction sans Tavares. Lou steps in as GM, and now they have a few weeks before the draft to find a new coach, with the new GM, to start the post-Tavares era in NY.

Zero Tavares talk on Hockeycentral at Noon so I would suggest that Sportsnet doesn't see Brady as an insider. Not even a mention on their website.

Ekland just takes fan speculation and turns them into "rumours".
In any event, a trade with Buffalo involving these two players is not out of the question. I would just hope that Calgary would get an add - at least Buffalo's 32nd overall pick, plus a prospect like Pu. Could have Pu and Foo together.
For Buffalo - a long term top pairing of Dahlin and Hamilton seems rather appealing.

I understand you're acknowledging Buffalo would have to add to make that deal happen because Hamilton is more valuable, but if I was Treliving, I'd rather just keep Hamilton.
I would be interested in trying to trade Brodie plus for O'Reilly though. He's a very good player, 27, and cost controlled until 2022-23.

I'm not advocating trading Hamilton.... but a package around O'Reilly could make sense. If Buffalo tossed in Reinhart for example that would be pretty enticing.
I personally wouldn't trade Hamilton, but if management has identified Dougie as one of the players who doesn't fit the culture they're going for, a deal with Buffalo would make sense.

I agree with you 100%. That O'Reilly plus Reinhart package would be interesting. The lines could look like:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Reinhart
Tkachuk - O'Reilly - Ferland
Bennett - Backlund - Frolik
Jankowski - Shore - RW
However, I'd need to look into the deal in more depth to know exactly how I would feel about the deal.

Perhaps he'd prefer Calgary's Lindsay Ell (though TBF I think she's actually hanging out in Nashville). She played at my firm's stampede party last year and she's good. And I will leave it to you all to google her.

Kulak was meh in his #6 role but I feel like Manning would be worse, older, and more expensive. He isn’t very good.
I hope we have a better plan for McDavid than bringing in a bad player who accidentally injured him once.

So speculating on this "rumour" but let's say it's true and Lou is going to trade Tavares rights before he walks for nothing.
I doubt it's a trade just for his rights, I'm willing to bet it's a sign and trade. Which means two things..
1. Signals an Islanders rebuild. The Islanders now can get back more from a sign - trade than just reading his rights...
2. And this makes me think Tavares will sign a modified NTC or some type of clause, putting Tavares in the drivers seat as to where he goes.
Also I think in that case Nashville gets him. Johanssen + and maybe Saros going back the other way.

Tavares has no motivation to agree to a sign and trade. All that does is weaken the organizational depth for the team he is going to end up with.
Actually, I guess getting the 8th year is motivation for him to do it, but i still don't see it happening.

I know I wrote it already... but I’m pulling my hair out trying to understand why a team would give the isles assets for Tavares. I see no benefit. In a couple weeks you can court him and discuss dollar figures. If it’s to get another year out of him (Isles ink 8 year deal then move him)... again, why would you do this? It has to be almost universally known that his production in the 8th year won’t be near what he will bring for the first half of the monster contract he is going to sign. It’s almost a bonus for other GMs that they have an even playing field of a 7 year deal, highest bidder per year wins.
You acquire Tavares to win during the length of his contract. Liquidating assets for a player you can get for ‘free’ is almost idiotic.
