The fact that he hasn't signed yet, despite having nearly a year to do so suggests he's going to test the waters at least.

Also, can you provide a link to where he says he's definitely signing a contract with the islanders? I still think they're in the driving seat but nothing is definite.

I never implied he ever said that, you are twisting my words. I said he had stated he wants to stay. I said I am 99% convinced he will stay on the Island. I can provide a bunch of links if it is really required that he has said he wants to stay, they are not hard to find.

I get that and I'm not twisting any words. Your rebuttal to someone who said (in their opinion) he's likely to test free agency was to ask them to provide concrete proof that is the case. I was just asking for the same standard. In the links where he's said he wants to stay, he could've easily said he 'is' staying but he hasn't.

Either way I do think you're right and there's a good chance he stays, however nobody except Tavares his family and his agent (I'd guess) know for sure what his priorities are. I'd imagine he really wants to see proof of intent and I think he's given them ample opportunity.

There's also no evidence to suggest he's the type of personality that would stir he pot; he's the consummate professional so he's saying all the right things. Also there's the fact that he's had a year to sign but hasn't, he can sign tomorrow if he was certain he wanted to stay but there's been nothing yet, so there exists some uncertainty.

I don't think there is any chance Tavares doesn't at least get to July 1st or 2nd unsigned.

There is no reason he would sign after coming this far without at least testing the UFA waters. Doesn't mean he won't return to the Island, but why bother agreeing to anything at this point until you see what else is out there?

I think both Vegas and San Jose (likely others as well) will take a huge run at him, which may help him leverage more money out of NY if indeed that is were he wants to sign.

I think Tavares to Nashville makes a ton of sense.

Tavares 10+
Johansen 8+
Turris 6

Close to the most expensive center ice ever.

He can't sign an 8 year deal if he waits until July 1. If he wants to stay with the Islanders, and wants to sign for 8 years, he needs to sign before July 1.

He can go to the courting period, listen to what other teams are offering, and if he wants to stay on the Island, he still has the option of signing before the end of the month, just like his buddy Stamkos did.

How long is the courting period? A week?

The speculation I've seen includes them trading either Johansen or Turris if they land JT

If JT isn't going to sign in Calgary, which admittedly seems unlikely, then I hope he does re-sign with Isles. Better than Vegas, San Jose, Colorado, St. Louis, Toronto or any other team that isn't the Flames.

This exact same thing was said about Stamkos.

The difference is that, as I understand it, the isles are willing to open up the pocketbook for him. So money is not the issue, it’s not a negotiating tactic... so why is Tavares holding out? It seems to me that he must be fairly interested in a change of scenery and would like to see what options are available.

Exactly, and I don't blame him. Snow and the Isles have pissed away most of his prime and are going in the wrong direction again.

If I was him there is no way I'd stay with that team, not if I wanted to win. And a crusty 75 year old Lou Lamoriello isn't going to change my mind either.

And he didn't sign until the last possible day...kind of my point.

He also left money on the table by returning to Tampa.

JT may or may not feel the same way, but there is no way he doesn't at least listen to what else the other teams have to say before making his choice.

Tampa also had a lot more success than the Islanders which made it easy for Stamkos to stay. In 2016 they were in the ECF and the Stanley Cup final the year before that. They also made the 3rd round in 2011. In Tavares entire career he has made it out of the first round once (that doesn’t strengthen the Flames pitch).

Don't forget the most important thing. No state income tax in Florida. It was made well known that although the cap hit was less it would be more money in his pocket.

I can't imagine that Chicago would want give up the 8 OA to get Brodie, and you make them throw in a 2nd also?

The value of the 8 OA and a 2nd is roughly equivalent to what the Flames paid for Hamilton.
