I question why you pencil in Hathaway, who got worse as the season went on, and not Lazar who improved during the course of the season.

Just a basic outline for the Flames roster. If it's not Lazar it's Hathaway, and if it's not Hathaway then it's Lazar.
Curious to hear your thoughts on the rest of it if this was your one take away.

Not many people putting Foo in the lineup for next year, which surprises me, as I thought he was pretty effective when he came up last year. He was way more physical than I was expecting and caused a nuisance in front of the net.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Kapanen/Sprong
Tkachuk - Jankowski - Palmieri
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik
Mangiapane - Shore - Brouwer
Giordano - Hamilton
Murray - Hamonic
Cole - Andersson
Smith
Gillies/Rittich
Trades
Sam Bennett+Brett Kulak to Columbus for Ryan Murray+2nd round pick
TJ Brodie + 3rd round pick to New Jersey for Kyle Palmieri
Fox + 4th round pick for Sprong or Kapanen
Stone for a 3rd
FA
Ian Cole 2 x 2.5m
Go in for Tavares but that is a pipe dream. If that happens, I would ship out Frolik if possible and move Janko to the LW and Ferland back to RW.
My proposal likely leaves some cap space on the table (didn't grind the numbers). I just don't think going in on JVR or Neal for $40+ million is the way to go.

People probably remember Shinkaruk impressing down the stretch in 2016 and then becoming nothing so people are not as quick to pencil foo in

I haven't followed Columbus closely but Ryan Murray was picked on the under 23 North American team at the 2016 World Cup of hockey ahead of Dougie H. He was added to Canada's 2018 World Cup team. I would guess that he has significant more value than Bennett who would not have been considered for either team.
Kulak has very little trade value. Why would Columbus consider giving up a 24 year old top-4 d-man for the package you suggest, they wouldn't do the deal without giving up the 2nd or likely do it if the Flames had a 2nd to give them,

Phil Kessel is available. It would certainly be interesting seeing him play with Johnny. Elite top RW goal scorer Calgary desperately requires. Sign Grabner to shore up the right side. You can interchange Jankowski & Backlund depending upon chemistry. De Haan needs new scenery and Calgary could just be what the doctor ordered. Bernier gives us increased stability for the backup position. I didn't do any cap analysis but I assume we should be fine.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Kessel
Tkachuk - Jankowski - M. Grabner
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik
Mangiapane - Shore - Foo
Brouwer (buyout??)
Giordano - Hamilton
C. De Haan - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone
Andersson
Smith
J. Bernier
Transactions
Trade: Sam Bennett + TJ Brodie to Pittsburgh for Phil Kessel
Sign FA: M. Grabner 3 yrs @ $3 mil
Sign FA: C. De Haan 2 yrs @ $2.5 mil
Sign FA: J. Bernier 1 yr @ $2 mil

I drool at the thought of trading for Kessel and signing Tavares.
I mean holy crap would that be awesome.
Gaudreau - Tavares - Kessel
Tkachuk - Monahan - Foo (or whoever)
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik
or
Tkachuk - Tavares - Kessel
Gaudreau - Monahan - Foo (or whoever)
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik

I am fine with the Flames trading Brodie+ for Kessel but that + better not be Bennett, that is too much.

You place way too much emphasis on who was and wasn’t picked for tournaments. It has very little relevance to building a good nhl team

I think he'll be given a long look at training camp. If not, he'll be one of the first call-ups with a chance to steal a job.
Similar to how Jankowski was eased into the lineup.

I really was on board the Gaudreau being NHL ready when he went to play well at the world championship before his rookie season. Was I wrong?
I was really pleased with Iginla representing Canada at the Olympics. Was that not a significant honor indicating that he was a superior NHL player?
---
Do you think that Bennett has more value than Ryan Murray?

In isolation you weren't wrong about either one but broadly using tournament inclusions or exclusions as some sort of gauge on NHL value isn't a sound approach IMHO.
I think Bennett and Murray are probably have similar value. Murray hasn't lived up to his draft billing either and has been passed by several other players on the depth chart.
I would keep Bennett because he has more upside. Murray never had much upside at all.
So yes I think Sam has more value.

You know that he was leading the league in scoring at the time he was selected (and continued to do so all year). Maybe that also indicated he was a superior NHL player?
BTW, Hamilton was snubbed. So were Kessel, Hall, Subban, Letang, Gio, Klingberg, Perry...

After listening to the FAN960 this am I think Brouwer is going to get bought out.
Boomer was hinting that Brouwer is complaining about his minutes and he also indicated that folks in the organization are saying his leadership abilities are overblown.

Brouwer is listed in recent article in the Athletic as #1 candidate to be bought out. Mostly because it likely costs less than the $1.5M in cap savings to replace him.
Apologies if this has article has been referenced already.

I think the Flames buy Brouwer out if we end up with 2 new RW either by trade or FA without losing any of our current RWs. Otherwise, the only reason to buy him out is if the Flames want to allow him to pursue other opportunities.
He was fine on the 4th line. Way over payed for a 4th liner... but good in that role.
