Well he's not claiming that the Flames owners offering to sign a lease agreement that provides taxpayers $$ equal to less then half of the capital cost of a project benefiting only those owners is actually a "gift" to said taxpayers or claiming that people who disagree with him politically should be hanged for treason so I'mgoing to figure he isn't Brett Wilson.
Alot of assumptions made here. I was mainly drawing a parallel between the hockey arena battle and the parking structure with offices. Maybe my intention was too covert for you? Put your parking structure wherever the hell you want. I am not going to be part of the <~2% of the poulation that will be gaining any "public benefit" from it.
Sigh. I live downtown, but have no intention of using new overpasses in the city's far southeast. I still pay for those like you do, even though I'm not one of the '2%' who will ever use it. I don't bitch about it; that's part of living in a big city. You pay for things as cities grow and develop. Such a wild, wild concept.
A parkade is a piece of municipal infrastructure and can act as a source of income for the city, thereby providing more ammo to reduce the necessity of raising your taxes. If you think you're being shafted because 10 cents of your yearly taxes are going to a useful downtown parkade that people will use for a variety of reasons, I've got a cloud for you to yell at. Get over it.

Congrats, you have two patents. That doesn't mean that incubator spaces are unnecessary for entrepreneurial development; if that was the case, you wouldn't have them being built all over the world and supported by governments, private businesses, and economic development groups such as Calgary Economic Development touting their benefits. Also, I'm sure CMLC isn't just building an incubator space willy nilly; they have a plan and it isn't just to get you personally riled up so you can rant on a message board. Lots of people use these types of spaces; just because you didn't doesn't make them irrelevant.

Really cherry picking from my argument there. No worries. I can see your all heated up over this, and its probably way harder to read everything through. The simple fact is, if its not worth it, don't pay it (which I have said a few times now). But to say that its worth $0.00, all or nothing isn't reasonable or realistic from either side. There will be concessions made by the city, and the flames will kick in more money up front so they don't have to share the revenue. But there will be public dollars for private business. That is a fact. That there is revenue involved is clouding the issue at heart. That is, what is the dollar value that makes it work for both sides?
As for the CSEC, corporations are always going to corp. Don't take it personally, they are asking for the moon, so it dosen't seem so bad when they only take the stars. Pretty standard procedure really. Your paying for the increase of infrastructure to the electrical grid in the oil sands, on every electric bill. Your also paying for innovation grants through your taxes to private companies that are monetizing their innovations, with no repayment apparatus in place. Believe it or not, corporations are getting your tax dollars EVERYDAY. Get over it.
And who provides the jobs in the province... the corporations. It’s how the world works. Hopefully they can find a mutual agreement for an arena
It would be interesting to see if that can be quantified, i.e. jobs per dollar of grants or tax credits. Then you would have basis for comparison. What bugs me is that the sports teams always say its not quantifiable because its indirect.
Well I would say if you really want the money then show me, make it quantifiable. They could use the strike year in 2004 as a basis for comparison, revenue with Flames and without Flames, what was the impact on booze sales, hotel visits and so on.
Also, take a look at the "PavCo ANNUAL REPORT", which presents the economic impact that BC Place generates from out of province visitors being around $20mm per year.

Interesting you mention this because I heard Nenehi and Farrell both used to be employed by the NHL and were actually working the night of June 5, 2004 and personally threatened Stephen Walkom to prevent a video review. True story.

Take it up with Lucas Meyer? Seems pretty clear in context of the tweets to me though.
I think the broader point is that Sutherland is trying (again) to paint it as some great Calgarian public gathering space, and Nenshi is making the point that fundamentally we’re still talking about a hockey arena used primarily (almost exclusively) for private business use. It’s not really a critical point in the larger discussion, which is why I think he said you know what I don’t care what we call it, but he was trying to remind Ward it’s a rink.
