Oliver North is taking a more measured approach as the NRA president. Just kidding, he just labelled the Parkland activists as terrorists. The victims? Why, the NRA of course, who are being oppressed worse than black people in the jim crow south. So good to see an American "icon" reach across the generational divide to try to cool things down. Well done Ollie!

I saw reports of the shooting about an hour ago and then came to this forum to read associated posts. There were none and I was sad. On previous shootings, the activity in this forum was higher. It seems like we are getting desensitized to school shootings.

Or maybe people didn't see it yet. The original story was published 30 minutes ago. This isn't the Washington Post newsroom here, give it a moment.

My opinion was not based solely on this event.

Well, the school year is almost over, so I suppose some people will feel a time pressure to get their shootings done soon.
On the plus side though, I guess school shootings will be reduced for a while once school is no longer in session.

I admit I am being desensitized. How can you not?
I used to be invested in the gun debate and argue for ideas to help reduce the gun violence.
After Sandy Hook and the national response of a shrug of the shoulders, I checked out. I couldn't come to grips with the fact 20 first graders were gunned down and there wasn't a national urgent movement to reduce the gun violence. The first thing people were thinking of is how to protect their gun "rights".
I feel for the families of the victims today, but I was devastated for the Sandy Hook families. After that, I guess nothing shocks me now.

Ya after Sandy Hook I just can't bring myself to care anymore. Nothing will change as far as gun control goes down there so there's no point in participating in the resulting gun debate that will ensue. And this one isn't even that big, "only" 8 dead. It will be forgotten in a week

Still love this article from the Onion:
"‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens"
https://www.theonion.com/no-way-to-p...s-r-1823016659
Quote:
In the hours following a violent rampage in Florida in which a lone attacker killed 17 individuals and seriously injured over a dozen others, citizens living in the only country where this kind of mass killing routinely occurs reportedly concluded Wednesday that there was no way to prevent the massacre from taking place.
“This was a terrible tragedy, but sometimes these things just happen and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them,” said Indiana resident Harold Turner, echoing sentiments expressed by tens of millions of individuals who reside in a nation where over half of the world’s deadliest mass shootings have occurred in the past 50 years and whose citizens are 20 times more likely to die of gun violence than those of other developed nations.
“It’s a shame, but what can we do? There really wasn’t anything that was going to keep this individual from snapping and killing a lot of people if that’s what they really wanted.”
At press time, residents of the only economically advanced nation in the world where roughly two mass shootings have occurred every month for the past eight years were referring to themselves and their situation as “helpless.”

its a weird situation....
Canadians (and citizens from every other western democracy) don't have the same connections to guns as Americans do, so its tough to understand why there is such a debate on common sense controls like limiting magazine sizes or banning AR-15s (which were banned for a decade under the Brady Bill and guess what? the World kept spinning)
at this point, its like watching a drug addicted relative fall deeper and deeper into their addiction, realizing only they can fix their issues by first admitting its an issue.

I'm at the point where I see 8-10 fatalities as "not that bad" in a US school shooting.

there's certainly a bit of desensitization on my part too, despite being a teacher myself. There's simply no change ever over there with their stupid guns, the NRA and swayed politicians.
I'm just glad to live in a country where guns are not omnipresent.

Just saw Trump's statement on the shooting, and of course it's the usual bulls**t:
thoughts and prayers, we must do everything we can to protect our children, this has been happening in our country for too long, yadda, yadda, yadda...
