Denis with a break of Hasse to lead 3-1 in set 3. Come on Denis!
Edit: Back on serve as Denis fails to consolidate.
Edit #2: Denis breaks back to lead 4-2. Both guys are feeling the pressure in this 3rd set.

Should be a pretty easy win. Last I checked, he was unbeaten in his career vs. Nadal.

Really something when you look back a few weeks and Denis couldn't win a match on clay to save his life, and now he looks, if not comfortable, at least a threat to most guys in the draw. It's starting to look like an absolute certainty (barring some sort of catastrophic injury or him turning into Kyrgios) that Denis will end up a top ten player. He might even get there this year. That's astonishing.
... But yeah Nadal is going to crush him.

It will be a good match, and closer than most people think. Either way will be a good learning experience for both players and for Nadal to win he has to play a good match. If he plays like he did against Thiem in Madrid he will lose. Shapo has 0 pressure to win this match, and just like in Montreal he can play relaxed. I'm looking forward to it.

6-0 6-2, but a great learning experience for the future world #1.

That was my inclination when I saw the draw, however, one thing I've learned from this kid is that you never count him out. There has already been a handful of matches where people have said he has no chance and end up on top.
I highly doubt he wins but I wouldn't say winning a set is out of the question with the way he's been going....and I will say right now that Denis will be a top 15 ranked player by the end of the grass court season.

Some fantastic shot making already from both players and incredible nerve shown by Denis to fend off 8 tough break points to keep the match on serve early!
I like what I'm seeing....kid showed up to win today.

I don't know how much gas Denis has left in the tank, but those holds of serve that take 11 minutes certainly won't help. Of course, that guy on the other side of the net has something to do with the difficulty of holding serve.

Very impressed with Shapo today. I've seen this story 1,000 times before and most times Rafa is up 5-0 by now. Kid has the mentality and the game to be a great player.

This is really the first taste of an elite clay player for Denis and he's faring better than 90% of the opponents Rafa usually beats down. I'm betting he'll get a few looks on Rafa's serve this next set as he learns how to deal with the spin more and more. He certainly needs to take a step or two back on the return and give himself a little more time and space.
Nonetheless, very impressive to have saved 8/9 break points thus far despite not being able to get into anything on Nadal's service. This kid is going to be a serious player, like Wimbledon soon.
