Ekholm hits an empty netter from his own goal line with a minute left to give Sweden a 3-1 lead. Sweden is the only undefeated team through the preliminary round to win Group A.

Canada will play Russia on Thursday in the quarterfinal.

Latvia defeats Denmark 1-0. The dream ends for the host Danes.

Quarterfinals on Thursday:
  • Russia vs Canada (Peters) // 8:15am MT @ Copenhagen
  • USA (Gaudreau) vs Czech Republic (Rittich) // 8:15am MT @ Herning
  • Sweden (Backlund) vs Latvia (Hartley) // 12:15pm MT @ Copenhagen
  • Finland vs Switzerland // 12:15pm MT @ Herning

I wasn't paying attention to the TV today but briefly saw something strange. Did the Russian team escort their goalie onto the ice on some sort of chariot or cart? Do they always do that or what was the reasoning behind that?

They were saying that the dressing rooms for the tournament had to be retrofit into the arenas, so some of them are quite a long way from the ice surface. They've been using carts to transport all the goalies to the rink for the games.

Gaudreau with an assist this morning according to the stat line. Team USA up 2-0

I agree that its too bad the USA game couldn't have been one of the late games.

I'm only glancing at the game, but up until this most recent shift, it seems like McDavid's line is always hemmed in their own zone.

Weird. I was listening to local sports radio while taking my son to work and the petulant dummy David Pratt was gushing about McDavid and his sheer dominance in this game.

And during the scrum in front of Kuemper where the Russians were overpowering Canada, guess who is standing watching? No, I won't tell but he was likely yelling, "let's go." Guess he didn't want to break a nail. Hey, McDufus, there was no way that puck was coming loose so you could take off and outskate everyone to look good. Get in there and dig it out yourself.
