As long as you can do 720p you're good.

Yeah, I think you might. 720p to 1080i, yeah, you're right, not much difference. But to compare either to 1080p is really not doing justice to the gloriousness of 1080p. Lets just say, 1080p is HD, the rest is an in between. And hence, I have yet to buy an HDTV until I can get a 1080p that I like and can afford.

You guys and your technology. I spend all my free time looking out the front window hoping to see a rabbit run by. . . or maybe I'm thinking of what my dog does.

You put far too much emphasis on resolution.
The difference between 1080p and 720p from over about 8-10 feet away on a 50 inch screen is imperceptible to even the best eye.
If you're talking projectors, now that is where you'd notice a difference.
Plus, there are very few 1080p sources anyway, and will not likely be any outside of BR/HD DVD for many years.

Good post, I never thought of projectors but as you said on a regular TV from your couch. I can't see how you'd be able to tell any signifigant difference. At least I haven't

It is in the works at some locations.
On Monday, I was told that Tuesday was the first day for it, but, when I stopped by the BB on 17th st and 37th ave SW, I was told not until late December.

I just bought the 360 add on an hour ago or so, but I wanted to buy Miami Vice on HD-DVD, but nobody had it. Not even going to open King Kong.

Ok, I opened King Kong
I am not totally blown away...in fact, I'm disappointed that I'm not blown away. I realize my TV isn't the greatest, but it's a 1080i 46" Toshiba DLP...what is wrong? Me, or the TV?

King Kong perhaps?? I haven't watched it yet
MI:III was the first one I watched and the picture and sound were amazing. What I find handy is that I can put a game in the main drive, and a tv show on dvd in the other drive and switch between the two without removing a disk.

Yeah, I've got a 27" CRT with rabbit ears that has to be fed through my VCR or else it won't work.
What's with this HD DVD talk? I'm thinking of buying my first DVD player this boxing day.

I use rabbit ears too
I believe the US sold their analog frequency spectrum in 2009... everything will soon be digital.

You're expectations are probably a little off. A film based movie is not going to have that same jump out of your screen look like a CBS HD football game, or something on Discovery HD, that are filmed digitally.
I find the improvement over DVD to be substantial though. The colours are better, and the detail in distance shots really stands out.
HD DVD may not look a whole lot better than a movie on the HD channel at first glance. And if you didn't notice any of the flaws from compression artifacts on the movie channel, you'd probably not notice any difference at all. The most noticeable difference is the lack of blocking in fast action shots/explosions/etc, where on cable/sat the picture will turn into a bunch of large blocks. http://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia_te...i=56319,00.asp The next most noticeable difference is the lack of banding that is often evident on cable channels. Cable channels, due to compression, often look like the pic on the left:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:C..._example01.png
Whereas, that is mostly gone on HD DVD.
If you weren't noticeing these flaws before, you probably won't notice a big difference.
These flaws are a lot more noticeable on larger screens as well. 46 inches is probably big enough to notice a difference though, unless you are sitting far away.
