I guarantee you if the Flames called Toronto up and said Marner or Nylander for Hamilton, Toronto wouldn't be able to fax the papers in fast enough.

Another thing a few leafs fans seem to think is that we were taken for a ride on the Hamonic deal. I know we paid a lot but if memory serves weren't the leafs in on him as well? I doubt we were the only bidders.
The market is the market, see Larsson, Hamonic, gudbranson and even the shattenkirk trades.

Nylander maybe but not Marner.
Their offence centers on the big three. Matthews/Marner/Nylander.
The leafs can score and on the blueline. their needs are someone who can defend and play a shutdown role. Trading Marner/Nylander for a player like Hamilton just plugs one hole and opens another.
I think they'll go after Tanev (cheaper to acquire), Jack Johnson (UFA) and John Carlson if he tests free agency before they trade their big three.

Word is that Toronto had the just about the same package for Hamonic as Calgary did, but the Isles wanted to move him out of the conference.

?? where did you hear that?
the Leafs offered JVR straight up for Hamonic. Snow went with futures instead.

As much as it’s a business, Snow was looking for a deal in Hamonics best interest (western Canada). Tie (or close to) and he was going to send the kid home.

I think this has as much to do with it as moving him out of the conference. Hamonic requested a trade and got it eventually.

Lets say the Leafs offer is exactly the same...Snow likely thinks the Flames picks will be better
I've heard the Oilers would have done the deal too...probably the same deal, Snow thought the Oilers would finish above the flames (remember this is last summer)
Honestly I can't imagine the Oilers not making that deal for Hamonic...and he would have helped them big time

I think OutToLunch's point was that JVR and a 1st is a lot more than 'JVR for Hamonic straight up', as Barca has suggested.
Burke might consider JRV and a first as equivalent to the Flames offer. Or maybe they made another offer that was even more similar.

JVR and a 1st seems like a reasonable conclusion...Islanders were getting a 1st+

The Leafs have to be really careful in terms of what they do contract wise. they have Nylander coming up, and I'm betting he's asking in the 7 million range if the Leafs want him long term, they've also got to replace JVRT, Bozak and Komerov. Next year they have Marner (probably 8 mil) and Mathews (probably 10 mil coming up, they also have Gardiner and Kapanen, coming up on contracts.
The Leafs are going to run into cap problems, they have the choice of trying to take advantage of their last year of contracts on those players and loading it up, and then blowing it up. Or being conservative on contract signings.

If Nylander wants 7 million no way Leafs keep him. He will be gone.

Well, back to back 60+ point seasons in you're first 3 years gets you a large raise, He's not quite $7m as he's one dimensional but he'll easily get $5.5-6m.

Help, save, whatever.

There's no point in predicting but I'd be surprised if he gets more than Pasternak.

Why? That's the cost of doing business in the NHL these days and keeping your top young players. 960 plays Toronto radio on the weekends and they are fully prepared for a $7+ million contract. When you look at what Draisaitl and Eichel got and compare the offensive output, Nylander's agent can make a compelling case he's worth a contract in the $7 million range. Is he worth that much? It's debatable but that's the going rate and you can blame teams like Edmonton and Buffalo for blowing up the salary expectations for young RFA's.

Cheveldayoff is probably the safest GM in the league, so it's not that surprising
