At least in both these cases there's a bit of an underlying structure of why I can see how some people would lean towards a conspiracy angle.
But Flat Earther's.... do they just not like ... globes? The international conspiracy theory of... gravity?!?!?!?
I mean come on, this is their sun/moon model:

They should make a reality show where it follows a group of flatearthers around the globe trying to proving to us that the earth is flat.

What happens when you walk (snowmobile? Nodwell?) to the edge of Antarctica? Can you look underneath and see the turtle's ass?

They wouldn't be going around the globe because, I don't know, it's not a globe.

Oh man, I just went down the flat-earther forum rabbit hole for the last half hour. That's some hard-core denialism.

How do they think gravity works? If it was centred in that disc everyone would be walking around on an angle. And if it’s suppose to be spread evenly, then how do that tiny sun and moon spin around?
I’m convinced it’s all a joke and they just get off on giving people aneurisms. And it works perfectly because it’s the dumbest idea anyone could possibly think of.

A friend of mine turns out to be a flat earther. I haven’t asked for his explanation yet and am not sure I will. He posted a comment about how water can’t bend and some math about the curvature of the earth. I decided to read up on this movement and went down the rabbit hole as well. It is a head scratcher for sure.

Now just to go a level deeper, how the hell do compasses and magnets work on a flat earth. If one end points north, surely the other end of a compass would point south. Do this a couple billion times across the world and find out the world is round.

No I was just showing that lots of people are fascinated/baffled by magnets. Hey even on this supposedly round planet those things are spooky. Just the other day my cutlery at Red Lobster stuck together...and not from garlic butter. They were magnetized!. True story. Did not get the free lobster stuffed mushrooms I had hoped for after such an ordeal.

Why do flat earthers get even a shred of attention is beyond me.
Its like someone saying computers don't exist and someone taking the time to debate them.

Old people. Have you seen the commercials? It's like Pavlov talking directly to my parents. They're always disappointed but they have to keep trying it.

Don't you love your parents?
I told mine that I will no longer be a party to their going to Red Lobster.

I'm trying to let them run out the clock in relative bliss. Trump is great. Auntie Rachel don't know nothin. And I'd better not bring a divorced girl to Red Lobster.

I took the plunge on flat earth and it was interesting to see how a compelling argument can be made out of a bunch of individual ideas that sound good on their own, but the sum of those ideas equates to some really bad thinking that crumbles when analyzed as a whole.
think flat earth has become a rallying point for people who are frustrated by technology, we live in an age of scientific wonder, and all that science is basically magic to anyone who struggles to grasp the basics of physics, which creates a feeling of helplessness that is soothed by rebelling against science by picking up the banner for things like flat earth.
Getting into flat earth does lead one to some more compelling conspiracies, such as the nature and purpose of NASA and the Antarctic, and the pentagons ability to lose trillions of dollars.

I think you are overthinking this a bit. Flat earthers are people duped by the internet. There are many other groups that are similar (anti vaxers, 911, etc.). People are easily duped. Useful idiot I believe applies here.

I think this is partially true as well. But you would have to have something against the science community to outright disagree with them based on some internet blogs. These are people who think the government is a big conspiracy. I’m not sure what really causes that other than a lack of education.
