Icon27 Stars hire Jim Montgomery as head coach

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...xt-head-coach/

Montgomery was Gaudreau's coach in the USHL.

Also some rumors that he was in consideration for Calgary's job before Treliving hired Gulutzan

This is an interesting hire. I look forward to seeing how Montgomery's Stars perform this season.

I wonder if no one wants to pay AV enough? He gets $4M for two years to take a break.

Still potential for more coach firings by the draft. Lots of time for AV to land somewhere.

I think it has more to do with the fact that AV's style of play seems to be unpopular these days. Everybody wants a cookie-cutter-system coach (except Ottawa/Anaheim for whatever reason)

I think AV is in no hurry, he is making big bucks for nothing. I also think he is watching what happens with Trotz. Washington would be a great fit for him.

It's possible, but unlikely.

Chicago, Detroit, Edmonton, Montreal, and Ottawa have all confirmed they're bringing back their head coaches for next season.

The coaches who were hired last summer are probably all safe as well.

That leaves St Louis and the Islanders as teams that might fire their coaches, but you'd have to wonder why they've waited this long if they were going to. If the Caps lose to Pittsburgh again, they might fire Trotz to bring in Vigneault, but I can't see any of the other playoff teams making a move (maybe Minnesota).

He might end up being the consolation prize for whichever team fires their coach early in the season.

It will be interesting to see if Montgomery can translate with NHL players. This Stars team is in win-now mode so he's not going to likely get a lot of time to get up to speed.

It appeared AV would be a good fit but maybe he's in a pretty good position where he's getting paid well to sit at home and can choose his destination.

I think it is worth considering that Vignault may not be as highly regarded by NHL GMs as he is by many fans.

I imagine he's very highly regarded but there's lots of factors like money, contract term, etc that a GM has to get the owner to sign off and I'm sure some GM's many simply have a style of play they want their team to play that may not fit with every coach including AV. Treliving for example seems to have the vision of a coach growing with the team rather than a veteran coach doing things his way. Carlyle was the only coach in two searches he interviewed that had a large NHL resume and that was probably on Burke's advice.

Two teams have let coaches go. One is the Flames (Rumours of being cheap) and are a very mediocre team. The other one being Dallas who are again another mediocre team. Out of two teams not hiring him you say GMs don't think much of him?

He is making a ton of money staying at home right now and he will get the opportunity to coach where he feels it will be the best fit.

I did not claim this is the case. I am merely suggesting it is something to consider. My point being that NHL GMs will have their own parameters and criteria for evaluating coaches that do not necessarily conform to those of fans. I personally think Vignault is a great coach, and he was my first choice to coach the Flames. But I am also prepared to concede that I may be wrong about all of that.

I personally really like Job Montgomery and believe that he is a rising star in NHL coaching ranks. Admittedly, my own opinion is governed rather superficially by my limited viewing of his time and record in the NCAA.

This is certainly possible. I guess it will remain to be seen.

Dallas didn't let Hitchcock go, he retired.

I would be surprised if he was asked back had he not retired.

I think AV is over rated. His Canucks team was loaded with talent and couldn't seal the deal. Not sure about the Rangers, but...

But according to a lot of fans I thought a GM would be an idiot not to hire a big name coach with a winning track record like AV.

Seemed like only a matter of time before an NHL team pulled the trigger on Montgomery. IIRC, he was being considered in NY as well.

Only a matter of time before Nate Leaman gets a shot too.

Really quick hire too. Probably didn’t even speak with AV. Brutal GM.

Does anyone remember his fight with Fleury? Circa 1996 maybe?
