I would be shocked if Tavares comes to Calgary. Warrener on the radio mentioned he thought Dallas would be a legit contender, and I hadn’t thought about that before but could see the appeal... Benn, Seguin and Tavares would be pretty interesting for them and I do suspect they’ll be in the hunt.

He also mentioned the Sharks, which is a great place to play and anyone that plays there seems to love it.

I just feel like if you have your heart set on Tavares coming here, you’re going to be disappointed. So I guess par for the course for being a Flames fan.

Like why would he want to come here? Its freezing cold all winter. Its a small city. We just missed the playoffs. I cant understand how some posters would think he possibly would want to come here of all places. Especially having grown up in eastern canada. We are probably one of the last places he would want to come

Dallas pays Benn $9M per, Seguin is a year away from needing $10M and Tavares is going to cost $10-$11M. Not sure Dallas can make it work unless the flip Seguin for assets.

That is the one true strength for Calgary. They do not have a $7M player and outside of possibly Tkachuk they won’t have one soon (barring trade). They have several young pieces in place and the cap flexibility to pay for a superstar.

If he and Hamonic are super tight I could see the Flames getting consideration. Still the most likely scenario is he stays in the east.

I'd say the odds are (a) NYI; (b) NYR; (c) Calgary (only if his playing in Canada talk is serious).

You actually expect him to say publicly that he wants to play somewhere else while under contract with NYI? That is almost never done, and the players who do are severely ostracized by the public. Which is exactly what he does not want.

Sometimes it’s helpful when you've forgotten how many games, or even shifts, you should play at a time.

Maybe to have the chance to win the Cup once or twice some place where it really matters?

With Tavares, the Flames would instantly be Cup contenders (as an example, not many teams could trot out a 2nd line featuring the likes of Monahan and Gaudreau). Meanwhile, even with him, NYI were not. And once they sign all of their RFAs, the NYR simply won't have the cap space.

It's still more likely that Tavares will sign somewhere else, there are after all 30 other teams. But I do believe that the Flames have a better shot than most other suitors.

I personally see him re-signing back with the Isles because seems like a loyal dude.

But if he tests free agency, the only Canadian markets I see Tavares signing with are Montreal and Vancouver.

Both need a #1 C and have a lot of cap space next season, two big markets with huge fan bases, beautiful cities and will be the face of the franchise.

Montreal:

Pacioretty - Tavares - Gallagher
Galchenyuk - Hudon - Lehkonen

vs

Dahlen - Tavares - Pettersson
Beartschi - Horvat - Boeser

He doesn't like the spotlight, and TO needs lots of cap space to sign their stud UFAs, so that pretty much disqualifies them. After their UFAs, the Leafs need their remaining cap space to sign a competent group of defencemen.

Vancouver would likely have little appeal based on its exorbitant taxes and the state of the team (still likely on the downswing, probably 4-5 years away from being a contender). I think that the chance to win would appeal more to Tavares.

FWIW I think it's just as or more likely that Tavares signs here than us managing to pull off a trade for someone like Seguin, marner, or mark stone. Why not speculate? Many Debbie downers around. The fact is that the flames can and should throw as much money as possible at him to make it happen. He would be a free asset that would change this organization.
