But it's better currency to fix real problems on this team rather than stacking it with more "top 4" D-men.
We need scoring, and we needed it last year too. It was just too much for what we're getting from Hamonic.
We needed a dman too. Last year we had 3 major holes: goalie, top 4 dman, and a top line RW. We filled two holes. The issue with the team this year was much bigger than any single position, and the 12th overall is not getting you a winger that fixes these issues.

I don’t have a problem with the trade too much, at 12 you have probably a 50/50 shot at getting a player as good as Hamonic, and that’s 3-4 years down the road. Biggest issue with the trade is the assets would have been better used on a forward.
Past 12th overall picks the last 10 years:
2017 Martin Necas
2016 Michael McLeod
2015 Denis Guranov
2014 Brendan Perlini
2013 Max Domi
2012 Mikhail Grigorenko
2011 Ryan Murphy
2010 Cam Fowler
2009 Calvin de Haan
2008 Tyler Myers
2007 Ryan McDonagh

No, but Erik Karlsson is on the trade block. That #12 pick would have serious weight in a possible acquisition. Again, the trade is done but I felt then and still do now that it was an impatient trade.

So maybe a premature question, what would we have to give up to draft Brady Tkachuk say at number 4?
Man, Brady Tkachuk is going to be such a disappointment for some team if the hype keeps up. His stats simply don't add up to him being anywhere near Matthew, offensively.
Obviously things can change, but NHLe is fairly accurate and it's very clear that Brady is getting a pretty sizable bump in draft rankings due to name. And the price to pay to grab a top end draft spot is so monstrous already that you better be sure you're getting a star player.
"Hey, look at Matthew, he's an incredible pest, who puts up amazing point totals and is only getting better......and here comes the next one!!!!!". Nope.

I would peg the Flames chances of Karlsson as pretty low no matter what assets we had. He will have a huge say in where he goes...Vegas or SJ was at the deadline because i think he wants to head out of the spotlight, out west, and one of them will be out in R2 this year and feel they want to make that next step.
As an aside, I think he will fall short of the sky high expectations of the fans of whichever teams lands him.
Boy, looking back, aside from Barzal, the Isles really haven't drafted well. Griffin at 4th overall! Strome at 5th. Two first rounder in 2014 and they pick Dal Cole and Ho Sang.
I'll take a proven #4 defenseman with the personality of a champion on and off the ice with a sweetheart deal over the lottery ticket equal to a 12th pick.
But I seriously doubt that you would take him over the 2017 #16 pick never mind the 2 2nds.
With the 16th overall pick the Flames choose Juuso Valimaki.
What irrational fans do is of no importance to me.
I suppose, if you don't plan on reading or engaging in this forum during the summer. Had our pick won the lotto, this place would be 3x as insufferable with the same group of people ranting about it in every thread for 3+ months.
Hahahaha can you imagine the line of GM's and executives and Bill Daly all in the room, and then there's some dude in a smiling plush orca costume? That would have been hilarious.
I assume it would have been Jim Benning in the mascot costume...

Rooting against Buffalo. That franchise is the Oilers of the east with how many times they're drafting this high and continuing to be more and more inept on the ice. Terrible franchise.

It feels like a win today since the whining and complaining from certain posters will hopefully decrease or at worst stay the same. There's a few on here I can almost guarantee were hoping we won the lottery just so they had more to complain about.
