Why would we want Gardner?

Also, getting smaller and softer is not the direction the team needs to be going.

To get Nylander I guess. He's the target in that trade proposal for the Flames.

If that's what you want, trade for that. Don't accept crap to get the player you want. (and personally, I am not keen on Nylander, based on what he likely costs to acquire)

Nylander is the type of player I think CGY needs. I'm talking about the skillset to get the puck from the d and skate it through the neutral zone, carry over the blue line and create off the rush or start plays down low.
Electric speed, the hands to handle the puck at pace and the brains to make and finish plays.

IMO the Flames forward group has only two players who can control the play - Gaudreau and Backlund - in that way.
Tkachuk is amazing but he isn't going to carry the puck through the neutral zone, he dominates below the circles. He needs the puck brought in so he can set up shop - why the partnership with Backlund was good.

Monahan is an elite finisher but we haven't see top end ability to carry the puck and distribute yet.
I don't necessarily see that CGY is lacking a finisher to be able to be a good team (although they do need to improve goal scoring) but they need another dynamic forward who can control the play and create quality chances.

I would go as far to say that only Gaudreau dictates the play from the forward group (although there is potential in Janko).

The ability to dictate play on the Flames comes from the defense. It's an indication of how porrly they were utilized that Gio and Hamilton didn't make your list.

I'm guessing you'd have to upgrade Brodie to Hamilton.

I wouldn't trade Hamilton for both Nylander and Gardner. Let alone add Bennett. Nylander is a small and soft second line winger with upside to first line. Gardner is a liability who has some offence and we have that already in Brodie.

If I'm Toronto I'm not making that trade. In current form Gardiner is better then Brodie or equal to him. Not going to let that last game determine his value. Sam Bennett definitely doesn't bring us back Nylander.

Even toronto fans call Gardiner an extreme hot cold player. You don't want a defenseman who can disappear based on the flip of a coin.

Kapenen for Stone is the only leafs trade I would look at.

No thanks.

TJ Brodie for William Nylander? Sure. We don't need and shouldn't want Gardiner - and certainly not at the expense of Bennett.

Why are you comparing F to D in the trade. If you compare F-F to D-D it's bad for Toronto.

Stone to Ottawa -> His bro plays there, might help get him locked up long term?
Ceci to Toronto -> Mobile, big, physical RHD younger than Stone
Kapanen to Calgary -> Young, goal scoring right shot winger just breaking into NHL

Because we need a forward and are sending a d-man out, and Toronto needs a d-man. The Gardiner/Bennett part of the trade is absolutely unnecessary.

Ok, what large piece are you adding to Brodie to get Nylander?

Nothing. We would actually have to cut one of Brodie's arms off to make it fair.

I don't think I would...well, maybe I'd toss in a 4th rounder. Overpaying in a trade which actively subtracts from the current roster makes no sense.

I'm on-board with moving a D-man for a forward, but Nylander isn't a guy I'd absolutely key in on - also I'm not entirely sold on Brodie being the guy. I think Brodie under a new coach, and potentially transitioning back to the right side could be huge. I'd look at a trade like Andersson for Sprong or Kapanen.

So let's compare the players in question over the last two seasons.

TJ Brodie: 10G - 58A - 68P (-16) AVG Ice 23:30
Sam Bennett: 24G - 28A - 52P (-34) AVG Ice 14:51

Jake Gardiner: 14G - 81A - 95P (33) AVG Ice 22:00
William Nylander: 42G - 80A - 122P (17) AVG Ice 16:20

The leafs pair has scored 22 more goals. They have assists on 75 more goals. Combining for 97 more points. The ice time is very similar. I really don't see how this is a trade the Flames can or would turn down.

Wow. One bad season for Brodie and people are saying Jake ####ing Gardiner is better than him?? Give him some time under a new coach on his proper side with a system that plays to his advantage. Not interested in trading Brodie at all especially for a floater like Nylander.
