I don't really care what Hamonic did for a 40 game stretch to end the year, it will be a disgusting overpayment, much more like what Edmonton gave up for a one dimensional Larsson, that is and should be viewed as one of the worst deals made recently.

whats done is done and i dont care
what does getting upset over a pick thats not ours going to accomplish other than giving yourself an aneurysm for no reason
what if germany won the war? what if my parents never met? what if the flames didnt suck and made the playoffs? all things that are completely and utterly irrelevant as they didnt happen

I just hope they win it just for the outrage that will be spewed out here. - 2.5% chance right?!?
I thought it was a fair deal at the time, but things didn't work out this season and as a result the pick is not lottery protected.
Was there a poll on CP on where people thought the flames would finish in the standings? I'm curious to know what percentage of us thought we would miss the playoffs......

2.5% to win the first overall. There's still the second and third that could be won. Around 8% chance to draft in the top three.

For me, I don't think that's the lesson.
I think it's more about trading 1st round picks when you don't know where in the draft that pick will be.
It was different than the Hamilton trade in that we knew the exact position of those picks. And high picks are proven to be the most effective way in obtaining elite players.
Even Tampa had an off year last year and missed the playoffs. It's easy for things to go wrong in the season.
The only time you should make a kind of trade like this is when the player you are getting back is truly a game breaker. Hamonic just isn't close to that.
Hell, even look at Ottawa. They traded for a player that many people would probably classify as a game breaker. Now they have to give up their 1st in either this draft or next draft. And it's going to be a high pick. That's the last thing that franchise needs.

If we win the lottery with our pick, I am just going with the mentality that the Isles combined both percentages of both picks and won it themselves. There's literally nothing we can do at this point, it's stupid to even think about it. The minute that we traded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick was the minute I decided I am going to look for "diamond in the rough" kind of players in this draft. It's really the only thing we can look forward to. No need to dwell on something we don't have.

Why do I get the feeling that this thread was created to do no more than keep everyone angry now that the head coach hiring has calmed down. "Its a meaningful discussion", no its not its no better thanFrancis click bait.

It doesn't matter, what the pick is going to be. It is a sunk cost. It is too early to judge the trade until the players the Islanders draft fully develop or bust. Based solely on Hamonic's and the team's play last year, I am sure Tre regrets that trade.

That's easy. As it stand now, the team won't be picking until well into the weekend in round 4. The rough will be plenty and diamonds few at that point.
If Tre can at least manufacture another pick in something like round 2, it will make the sting of all these draft pick trades much less sharp.

Taking a while to get to 5000

With the NHL dragging the lottery out this weekend (half the picks done prior to the Saturday night game, final picks during the 2nd intermission I believe) I just hope the Flames show up early and we all don't have to sit in suspense waiting for that 2nd intermission.

This. If we'd kept the pick, literally everything would be different. Except we probably still wouldn't have made the playoffs. It wouldnt have been the same combination of numbers.

It really doesn't matter and hopefully the top three picks are all out east. If that means the Islanders win twice and get two of top three then thats great. as long as we can push oilers and canucks out of the top 5

Seriously, a team with Dillon Dube as it's best forward prospect thought trading 3 premium picks for a 4/5 Dman was a good idea. Pretty dumb with Stone and Andersson already right there.
|
Well Hamonic is more of a 3/4.
Biggest problem with your analysis is you focus on our best forward prospect while not acknowledging that we have Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Jankowski, Bennett, Ferland as young NHLers with very high upsides. A team with those young forwards doesn't need to have a great forward prospect base right away. Eventually we'll want to get some guys in the pipeline but it isn't a dire need.
Also we hadn't signed Stone when the Hamonic trade was made. How bad would our defense have been without either? Not great IMO.
It sucks we missed the playoffs and that the pick has a chance to be a top 3 pick. But w/e. Some fans underrate the value of defensive defensemen. You usually need a good one to contend and we didn't have any. Hamonic went for market value and I didn't hate the price then and don't hate it now even though I obviously am a big fan of having draft picks.

I could see a scenario where the flames drafting Tkachuk. Its a player they don't have enough of.
If Tavares or another legit top 6 forward comes over in free agency, the flames won't really need another top 6 player. But they still would have too many defensemen. They probably have to make room for at least two defensemen in the next two years (Andersson and one of Valimakir/Kylington), and should expect at least one will quickly slot in as a top-4 defensemen.
IMO that means while it might make sense to trade Stone within the next two seasons, it might also make sense to trade Hamonic or Brodie or Hamilton in the next two seasons.
What's coming back? Probably a really good prospect or draft pick.

That's true every single time a 1st-round pick is traded before that year's draft lottery.
Trades involving major assets are already hard enough to make in the NHL. If GMs decide never to trade 1sts, they'll become nearly impossible.

Trade already happened unfortunately. The picks would’ve been better used on a RW for the top line or goalie. Not a fan of trelivings asset management. Hopefully Treliving won’t trade away another 1st round pick for a 4th dman or bottom 6 player.
