I truly feel for those who have just lost loved ones for absolutely no reason at all so go easy on this question but I have always been curious on the mental state and never understand why the bad guys rarely go"all in". 5, 10, 20 people dead is an awful thing but these idiots are clearly out to do harm and it could have been hundreds of casualties. What makes them stop at driving 1km on a sidewalk? Why no firearms or explosives? Do these guys wake up in a good mood and then a switch goes off and there is a rush to do harm without preparing? Is it not about how many lives they can take as long as they get their point across?

Well I think everyone is upset at the entire situation. Doesn't mean you're a snow flake just because you don't want the guy killed on the spot.

What if he knows something or someone else that could be related and police get that information out of him? It's not the wild west, I'm glad they could take him alive to grill him for info. If they had to shoot him so be it, but if you can get him alive you probably should.

Headlines and descriptions with these incidents are so weird. "Van hits pedestrians, flees scene". A person using a van hit pedestrians. The van is an inanimate object.

In a shooting, it's not - "bullets fly into people".

What a terrible day.

Much easier to go and rent a van or truck that it is to source proper materials for explosives or go buy a gun on the black market. Easier to use as well.

I'd also bet that they aren't quite right in the head and don't have great planning skills.

Probably covering their ass legally if they can't say for sure that A) the person driving meant to run people over, and B) it was the same person who fled the scene.

I think a psych assessment should be conducted first before labeling this crime in black and white. This could very well include untreated mental health issues as much as it could be planned attacks from radicalization. And the latter might be resultant from the former.

This is such a brutal situation. Apparently some of those in hospital are still in critical, life threatening condition. Do you think the Maple Leafs vs. Bruins game goes ahead, or do they postpone?

In either case, the person is mentally ill. You can't run all these people over and be in your right mind.

Yes. You absolutely can. This meme about it being impossible to be psychologically normal and do awful, horrible things needs to stop as soon as possible. People who subscribe to terrible ideas are willing to do terrible things in furtherance of those ideas.

It's possible that someone suffering from a mental health disorder would do something like this, but it's absolutely not a given.

We like to tell ourselves that people have to be mentally ill to do stuff like this, because we find it difficult to imagine that level of hate. But that level of hate is real, and an individual doesn't have to be mentally ill to feel and act on it.
