What is Treliving's belief on how the game's played?

How could the expectations be lowered? This board has been collectively talking about the only thing holding this ultra talented roster back has been coaching.

Expectations should be through the roof right now.

Yeah, it seems like fan expectations will be lowered but internal expectations will be very high. This is good because it means high accountability.

That would also explain the seeming lack of a search if they had already done the research two years ago.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. I know in 2016 Treliving emphasized the work needed to create a "profile" for who the new head coach was going to be. I'm guessing his experience with Peters may have informed what that profile was, and it eventually lead to the Gulutzan hiring.

It also explains the timing -- Treliving needed more time in 2016 to create the "profile". In 2018, he already knew what he was looking for (as evidenced by recent quotes from Treliving that he already had the "profile" in place this time around).

I'm cautiously optimistic about the hiring, knowing full well the other top end coaches that were available. However at the end of the day, there is nothing we can do about it and as a fan of the team I will support the decision to hire him. You can tell right away he's a leader. I don't think there is any doubt about who is going to own the room from day 1. Seems like a tough Alberta boy who knows he's in change.

IMO that is exactly what is needed for this team. Seems like a hard ass, but fair. He might have a similar system or NHL numbers that GG had. But he seems the complete opposite in personality. IMO, that was a much bigger change that was needed from the bench boss vs a system change.

For a guy giving his first interview to Calgary media, I thought he did an excellent job of presenting his thoughts and vision of what he wants this team to be.

I'm cautiously optimistic this could work out. Much more so then when GG was hired.

Thus setting up another vitriol filled season if that's the case.

I'm honestly going to try a limit my expectations this year and just try to enjoy the season on a game to game basis.

I like Treliving's comment on 960 about the difference between "being quick" and "playing quick" a lot.

Style not fundamentally different but there will be differences and players will need to adjust. It will be a quick and up-tempo game (like Gulutzan???)

That was the big thing last year. They didn't play quick because they didn't think the game fast enough.

Ok, we have a new head coach, love him or hate him (would love a poll on that), but shouldn't we be asking the question - who are the AC's going to be?

Teams like Nashville, Winnipeg (to name a couple obvious choices) rarely get close to the cap and are proving this to be a very prudent strategy. Carolina is one of the youngest teams in the league with 4 regulars coming off of ELCs in the next year - payroll is going to be at least $12M higher as those raises kick in for extremely good, young players. This strategy is certainly not a negative when you consider the Hurricanes are rebuilding and have the players to be a very good club, very soon.

I'd honestly rather the Flames drop $5-6M in payroll and don't sign Brouwer/Versteeg type players who give you very little or end up hurt or look for crummy PTO players every year.

That's step #3 of the off-season process.

Not necessarily a vote of confidence for the remaining coaching staff (Gelinas, Sigalet, etc). Said its a clean slate for Peters. They are part of the coaching staff, but its a clean slate for him to do what he needs to.

Treliving saying that fundamentally not drastic change between Gulutzan and Peters but there will be tweaks. Says uptempo is a key point.

I like the uptempo aspect. I heard active d from Peters. So this is good but we'll have to wait and see obviously.

I'd like to see the VGK type of team but if Peters wins and it's entertaining he'll have a fan in me.

Welcome to the Flames Bill!

Not going to put much stock into what is said. All coaches sound good when they are hired. Gulutzan was talking about the great d core too and how mobile it was when he was hired.

Actions will speak louder than words.

I'm curious to see if any Flames get added to the World Championship roster right now. You'd think Peters has a say and i'm sure he'd like to familiarize himself with some players.

I remain skeptical, but hopeful.

Bill said all the right things, and admittedly, that does inspire a little more confidence than the previous coach's comments.

But nothing matters until the rubber hits the road. I hope he runs a tight training camp and they hit the ground running in the season opener. Win or lose, I'd like to see them putting in an effort every game.
