I am still busy dealing with the satisfaction that GG will not be our coach next year to have an input on Bill Peters

There's no doubt the defense could have been better but Smith was not the same goaltender on home ice. Way too many soft goals and below average performances on home ice.

I read a lot of your posts, most of the time you come off optimistic no matter what the circumstance. To me, that's much easier to do, as you are probably not as emotionally involved as some other fans. So to you no matter what, its always gravy. For people like me that have followed the team for a long time, I want to see a winning product on the ice, and I will voice my opinion when I don't like the direction the team is taking.

I agree on this.
It would be great to be able to quantify and decouple
Based on type of plays on each shot, what would the expected sv% be vs. what it was.
That would take re watching the games though

Yes, a hot commodity. Dallas and perhaps the Rangers were after him and the Flames had to poop or get off the pot.
If the Flames were sold on him, they had to move quickly. It appears they did.
|
The problem I have with this view is that it assigns no agency to Peters. You make it sound like he's a sale item on a shelf and whoever runs to it faster gets it.
If he's a hot commodity, he would know it and find / negotiate the best situation for himself. Everyone on this board would do the same thing if they heard multiple employers were interested in them. He might still choose Calgary then, but it would actually take some time to meet / talk / weigh offers. The speed at which this appears to be done doesn't send the message that Peters thought he was a hot commodity.

Again with the "don't tell me how to feel" posts. Cecil simply made the point that it's easy to complain than actually wait, look at what happens, and then make a conclusion. Let's not get into who is more "emotionally invested" contests.
The amount of complaining about a coach who hasn't even been hired, let alone coached one game, is ridiculous. There's all kinds of reasons to give Peters a decent benefit of the doubt.

I has had a quick look at some of the early season stats for Carolina with Peters because one of the things that I read was that the team was consistently unprepared for games. In the four seasons with Peters the Hurricane only had one season where they started with a win percentage over .400 in the first ten games.
In 2017-2018 the Hurricanes allowed the first goal 36 times and only won 7 of those games. The previous season they allowed the first goal 48 times and won 18 of those games.
I know it is tough to predict what could happen next year but these numbers are very similar to what the Flames have done during Gulutzan's tenure. I'm not too optimistic that Peters will be able to get much better results from the Flames.

We all want to see a winning product on the ice. We are all emotionally involved.
It's how we handle it that differentiates us.

38 points, 57.1 CF%, +3.2 CF% rel in 15 mins of ice time per game.
If that's our Brouwer, I'll take it.

That can come down to them simply being a bad team.
That said, look at Pittsburgh's early record.

Hard to say how this will turn out. I don't know much of anything about Bill Peters. Not surprised by the decision to hire him though given his roots to southern Alberta.
What i really hope for though - is that if this team has another mediocre season under Bill Peters, we can stop simply blaming the coaching staff for under performance.
While i know it is easier to ship out the coaching staff, and the GG crew gave plenty of reasons to do so, it still feels inadequate to think that is the biggest problem here. And my fear is that this player group will get another season together to show they can put it together under a new coaching staff. Count me as a doubter on that one given how this season ended. Coaching alone does not provide an explanation for this team's exceptionally poor - very Oileresque - performance after the all star break. It was an embarrassment.

Just because someone has more perspective and optimism doesn’t mean they haven’t followed the team as long or don’t care as much
I have followed the team for 35 years. Doesn’t mean I have to pitch a fit over a coaching hire

I'm not going to judge him or cry about this hire until I see how this team works in training camp, who comes out of training camp, what our roster looks like and how the team looks after 20 games.
Frankly he was stuck with an awful budget hamstrung team with terrible goaltending.
A big part of this whole equation is how he deals with the leadership element of this team and the group of players that didn't give a good effort this year.
However its clear that they wanted a coach with a bigger bite and if Peter's is hired that his guy.
sitting here and talking about another year without playoffs and the failure of this move without even seeing day one of training camp just comes off as silly.
don't be excited about it, nobody is, but at the end of the day, we don't know what we don't know.
Plus I'm still convinced that the Flames owners have put a cap on hiring a 5 or 4 million dollar a coach year with the arena uncertainty. Hiring a new coach isn't going to bump this teams revenue as I'm sure the owners are smart enough to know that raising ticket prices is probably a no go.
I'm also sure that they know that no matter who they hired as a coach they're going to lose revenue, so why over spend.

How so? If the new coach has the same wrong message in a different voice, you should expect similar results.
The message isn't expected to change. You can't build around a system. We are built around three defensemen who, the day Glen Gulutzan was signed, were identified by Gulutzan as 40+ point guys, and playing systems in which only one of them - the worst of them - is a 40 pt guy. We added an expensive 25 pt defensemen and placed him into a system where he scored 11 points.
All in all it can't be time to "start blaming the players" when you have Giordano, a 55-60pt guy, in the mid-30s and Brodie, a 45-50pt guy without relying on the PP, also in the mid 30s after relying on the PP, and Hamonic being outscored by such offensive beasts as Engelland.
Peters has to implement a system that will make use of the pieces at his disposal. If that fails it is time to start blaming the players. Blaming the players if they don't produce playing Gulutzan's system with a different voice is poor logic. All four guys in our top 4 D have produced offensively in the past and neutering them and then discarding them is just absurd. D creating offense is what gives today's top offenses depth and we should be right at the top of that given the proven production before Treliving's vision was enacted.

I really, really hate this and have zero optimism about it. There are coaches available with good and great track records and we just reached into the discount bin. Sutter, Vigneault, Trotz, and a few others: decades of successes. I just don’t get how we aren’t even interested in the proven records of others out there.
This really feels like a horrible misstep to me, and my faith in Treliving is done.

No kidding, and why have a fit before even seeing how the team plays under the new coach first?
I can see someone saying "I don't like it, I don't think it will work, but it is what it is I guess let's see how it goes", but there are way too many people in here having temper tantrums and saying dumb stuff right now. For the record I wanted AV as coach.
They might end up being right, but holy crap it's gonna happen whether you like it or not. Get over it for now and let's see how it goes so we don't have to read this BS splattered all over the forum for next 6 months.
....and this is coming from a fan that has followed this team since the early 80's and is completely fed up with this organization right now. My patience is at nearly an all time low for this team, but even I'm willing to see how it goes before getting mad about this hire.

It is one thing to voice your displeasure, it is another to be instantly negative and closed to optimisim.
You can chose to have hope, or you can be miserably negative. It's all in how you look at the situation. I'd rather have hope and be happy some of the time than unhappy all the time.
