Sutter regularly did it for whatever backup he had at the time, except maybe Noodles. He was tremendously hard on them considering the few times they actually had a chance to play.

My god some of you guys are unbearable. There isn't a coach in the league that would have made the playoffs with the hurricanes in the last 4 years. It's a bad team with terrible goaltending. What do you people expect him to do?
Calgary was a good team this year with a horrendous powerplay, brutal transition game, zero scoring depth and with no creativity.
So they got a guy that plays a similar possession style game but that focuses on mobile defenseman pushing transition and lots of line juggling based on matchups. That's exactly what I've wanted all year. Scoring depth and the pp are treliving and the assistants problems. If Peters actually uses our defense as they should be used that will instantly make the team better.

Unless you're a precog, wait and see is the only logical approach. Being skeptical is one thing, demanding guaranteed future success is just not a reasonable expectation and bringing in a proven coach provides no more guarantee than bringing in someone like Peters does.

I wonder if Mike Yeo could end up here as an assistant if St.Louis decides to move on from him.
Has been an assistant to Bill Peters at both the 2016 and 2018 world championships.

Again, we should have hired Bruce Boudreau in the first place and wouldn't be in this mess. He is a better coach then anyone available now.
Without living in the past though I am ok with Peters as head coach. Now up to Treliving to fill in some gaps. Another top 6 forward that can score. If he doesn't think Mangi or Dube are ready for 3rd line minutes (I think they are), then he needs to get more scoring depth there as well. Secondary scoring is what cost us this past year. Not coaching, defense, goaltending etc.

He's had a rough go of things in St. Louis (and Minnesota) but I'd be fine with him as an assistant here. He's done well in that role.
Plus he's my exact double so I could sit behind the bench like the Paul MacLean clone.

And with the Kings too:

This isn't much different than what Peters said about Lack.

Surprised to see so many upset by this. All year I read on this forum how Gulutzan didn't show enough emotion behind the bench, he was too soft, didn't take his players to task, was too loyal, wouldn't make the necessary decisions with his line up, the roster took on the persona of the coach, etc etc.
Trying to understand what the objection here is. Obviously Peters hasn't coached a team to the playoffs but look at the hand he was dealt. A budget team with poor goaltending. Is there a coach in the league that could have done better? Is that coach available? The answer's are doubtful and nope. Otherwise Peters bring a solid resume to the table. People argue he's just like GG, well wasn't John Cooper an untested hire? What about Bruce Cassidy? What did AV look like after he got canned on Montreal??
A couple things I look forward to are; Peters looks like he commands respect. I would bet the feeling around the room will be different. I also understand he isn't timid about juggling lines. If you're one of the vast majority of people around here who have been screaming from the roof tops to get Brouwer off the PP and to split up Brodie - Hamonic, or put Bennett on one of the first two lines, this should be something you might appreciate.

Laughable that some of you think Peters will leave the Hurricanes to be an assistant coach for the Flames with some convoluted succession plan in place once Sutter/Vigneault are hired.
This is the same wishful thinking that took place when the Sutter trade madness in 2010. "Ales Kotalik? I mean sure he sucks, but there's gotta be something else happening in the next week. Sutter is just making room for the guy we really want and Kotalik is going back the other way!"

I remember clearly when Bob Johnson was hired by the Flames back in the 80s from the University of Wisconsin, everyone thought it was crazy. Fortunately, there were no internet or message boards at the time so outside of bitching to your friends and neighbors, we could only wait for results. If BP is anything like Bob I'm all for it...then again...

We were essentially an average powerplay away from being in the playoffs this season. A fresh coach and assistants may be all this team needs to get back in. We'll see if Peters is the guy to take them deeper. I personally have my doubts but he deserves to actually coach this team before everyone starts throwing him under the bus.

^ Q ^ No-one actually thinks this. More hoping it's what it is because that means he's not Head Coach

5 v 5 CF% has a % correlation of 37.1. 5 v 5 FF% has a % correlation of 33.0. 5 v 5 SF% has a % correlation of 32.6%. These metrics are actually pretty important when you consider that PP% has a % correlation of 7.3% and PK% has a % correlation of 3.9%.
I'm not saying any of the stats tells the whole story. But, if you look at all of them in context and over time, they can be helpful.
I don't think they should be written off.
Rob Vollman says you can explain about 35% of success through the analytics we currently have. There is a lot of room to improve (just look at baseball), but that's a pretty sizeable contribution.

Smells like another mediocre, outside the box -type of coaching hire.
One thing should be for sure, Trevliving lives or dies by this decision. Can't see him surviving another strike with coaches.

putting guys on their off wing during the power play so that they can shoot one-timers is almost literally the only thing I care about in a new coach. If Bill does this, then he can do whatever he likes with the rest of the game and I'll be happy.

Unfortunately we also remember every other newbie/unproven coach hired by the Flames in the 30 years since then.
I hope it turns out like Bob...I just don't get why this team continually takes these chances, considering the mediocre results every time we do so.
