Sooooo he’d be good for a couple years?
That’s exactly what they need

Sheldon Keefe is an incredible coach and is poised for long successful NHL career, but I don’t think Treliving would go with him at this point. He would be my number one choice, but assuming he isn’t a realistic option: bring back Darryl!

What do these have in common? Congratulations, that’s right, both get zero points and an F.
Please retake the class, Johnny.

Eh, it’s not that.
It’s that as fans, sometimes we have the habit of coming to a conclusion before it happens, and getting high about it. Generally this goes hand in hand with ignoring the other factors, like say, not voting for a coach that didn’t work but ignoring the fact that a whole of votes went to coaches who turned out to be not good either.
Sorry if you thought it was an attempt to belittle, I’m guilty of it too.
Not sure why you care though, you didn’t even vote in the last coaching discussion newbie! lol

If you're going to nitpick then be prepared to expect likewise - particularly when you've adopted that kind of a snarky tone.
Travis Green and the Canucks may have missed the playoffs, but at least made his team overachieve for a bit... particularly when their already questionable offence (including their Calder challenger) got completely decimated by injury.
Dineen, Q and the Hawks got crap luck from the Toews line and bad goaltending. Would have to consult thefoss on that one. Is that on Q? Or, by extension, Dineen? Not to me.
Carlyle and the Ducks aren't looking good this round, but they swept us in the playoffs last year. And made it in this year with the injury bug hitting their centres so hard they traded for Henrique.
And of course, Darryl's making use of his time off while rocking two post-lockout Cup rings.

I wonder how/if exit interviews influenced who was retained and who was let go.

Now maybe Darryl can work wonders with Bennett but it doesn't mean 'Bennett is made for Darryl's style'. You have 27 point Dustin Brown on the Darryl end of the spectrum (2014) and 61 point Dustin Brown the first yeazr away from Darrytl. What if that's Bennett right now - a 60 point player playing 26 point hockey under Gulutzan (and maybe it isn't, but my eyes tell me it's a possibility). We need to find a solution to his woes and I am of the opinion that needs to be priority number one in the coaching search. That doesn't mean I'm not a huge fan of Darryl Sutter. In fact Darryl pretty much wrote the book on awesome coaching and he's far more adaptive than people give him credit for - but to me this team was lacking a coach that would push the individuals to flourish for the good of the team.
An individual breakout for Bennett, especially as a center, would go a long way for this team. Even if Bennett was only average as a two-way player, his ability to impact the game down the middle when on his game is unparalleled even by Monahan, Backlund, or Jankowski. There's some things - reads, dynamism, etc that only Bennett possesses in our center group and the coach who can successfully harness will mean a lot for the long term future of the team - even if said coach can't immediately take the team to the next level the way Darryl could. I don't think you can always have your cake and eat it too - some players' development paths need to have years of learning offense from some coaches (as Monahan and Gaudreau did for two years under Hartley) and learning the full game under jothers. I've seen it elsewhere too - Kadri in Toronto, Seguin under his three coaches. I felt Backlund needed the switch to Hartley even if Hartley had toxic qualities.
|
So I read this as saying Darryl could still be the guy it is just not slam dunk that he would be the guy that turns Bennett's game around. I agree!! I guess every team has a coach that doesn't mesh with a certain player/s, however Darryl has proven he can take a team all the way and that's a good place to start. AV would be a good choice too, hopefully we can land the best proven coach available and let the chips fall.

Feel bad for Gulutzan - he was a good human being, and regardless of the on-ice performance, I feel bad to see him fired. This is a tough business, and often a humiliating business as nobody enjoys getting fired, especially in public like this. On the flip-side, he was very well compensated and hopefully this adds to his resume and helps him grow professionally, as most newer coaches fail before they succeed, and even experienced coaches fail and are fired. At any rate, good luck to him. I also hope that some of the stuff that he brought to the organization will be helpful in the future, and that individual players learned something under him that they can apply in future years.
With that being said, this was an important decision that probably needed to be made for this team to take a step forward. The team was stagnating. They did not have many significant injuries this year, spent future assets to help propel themselves into the playoffs, and the expectations at the start of the season was that this was going to be a 100 point team. When expectations fall this short, changes absolutely must be made, especially when factoring-in the lack of a built-in excuse (injuries).
Will be interesting to see how quickly the Flames hire someone, and who that may be. Treliving's stopwatch is moving faster now with his second coach firing, and he probably needs to make this next one work. Will be interesting to see where he goes, and how much the owners are willing to pony up as well.
Expensive and big name coach? Relatively new blood again? A more analytical coach once more in the mold of Gulutzan, or in a different direction?
The excitement of this off-season just kicked off today.

I don’t feel bad for anyone who has successfully lived their dream and made at least 7 figures each of the past two years. It’s part of the career choice.
