Coaching makes a big difference, the Knights and Penguins are perfect examples of this.
If you have a good coach, you have a good team, regardless of being an expansion team or a Stanley Cuo Champion.
If you have a bad coach, it doesn't matter how good your roster is.

This is ridiculous. If the coach were the only thing that mattered, teams would just spend to the floor, ice a bunch of AHLers and try to find the "best" coach.
And the Knights got the most favourable expansion draft rules ever, which included them getting a bona fide #1 goalie.
These Knights players obviously a) have skill, and b) are coachable. You can't just throw a bunch of headcases and plugs together, hire the second coming of Scotty Bowman and expect stellar results.
