Now what team could use a right shot sniper.
Kovalchuk is so underrated it's not even funny. The guy is one of the most purely talented players I've ever seen. When he took New Jersey to the finals that year he was every bit as good as Iginla was in 04. I think he's a good bet to score 40 goals next year if he's healthy.

Perhaps you two have history that I'm unaware of, but this feels like an overreaction. He's just pointing out that it was widely believed that team wasn't going to lose. Worth commenting on I think.

We don't have ant history. I didn't mean post in any aggressive way, nonetheless that Malamud's theory was a joke. I commented on Russia's free fall mostly because that's #1 topic on my mind right now.

If your pro conspiracy, its funny cuz it fell flat on its face. If your anti conspiracy, its funny cuz it all ended up as nonsense. There's something for everyone. My depth of reasoning never went deeper than a sensible chuckle.

Correct. Your posts always confuse me a little. Was this meant as a joke? Sarcasm? Factual statement?

You know he's 35 in a week, right?

He'll be the same age as Iginla was when he was traded to the Penguins. You have to go back over a decade ago to Selanne when the last time a player entered the season as a 35 year old and scored 40 goals.

There hasn't been, nor will there be, a good bet for a 35+ year old player to score 40 goals except potentially Ovechkin.

Kovalchuk likely takes the place of Rick Nash on the Rangers. Statistically speaking.

Edit: This would also make the NYR-NJD rivalry more fun

Kovalchuk, Nash and Iginla are all UFAs this summer.
Too bad it wasn't 2004 again.

This would annoy me if I were a Rangers fan.

Have fun in the basement Kovalchuk. Can’t believe the 31 teams didn’t just agree to keep him away from the NHL.

Luckily for him goal scoring is up and all he does is score goals. I bet he gets close.

New conspiracy: the "Putin's team is SKA" was created by Putin in order to fix the betting lines, then a bunch of his buddies put money on SKA to lose and make a killing on the odds. Then they just put snake venom or whatever into SKA's water and bammo, everybody makes millions.

Five players have scored 40 goals starting the season as 35 years or older. That's in the entire history of the NHL.

I'd easily make the bet that he doesn't score 40.

Howe in 1969
Bucyk in 1971 and 1973
Esposito in 1979
Shanahan in 2006
Selanne in 2006 and 2007

Both Shanahan and Selanne arguably benefited from the rest of the lockout in 2006, Selanne in particular pretty much credits his revitalization from that lockout and the effect it, and the surgeries, had on his knees. In any case, both those players were one of eleven 40+ goal scorers that year in the significantly higher scoring season.

Plus, right after the lockout, the anti-obstruction rules were heavily enforced, scoring went up both because of the increased PPs and the freedom for guys like Selanne.
