Looking at those 2 rosters hard to believe the current Flames are struggling as much as they are. We need a coach who can teach the young guys what it takes to commit and make sacrifices to get us to the playoffs. I don't think we are getting enough out of our current players, maybe GG just doesn't have the answers to increase the compete and push players buttons in the right way.

Hartley didn't like Bouma that much. I think you meant Stempniak on the 2nd line

I dug up this old tweet from when GG was hired to summarize why I'm most disappointed with the Gulutzan coached Flames:https://twitter.com/user/status/743847053168676864
Very rarely did the team play an exciting game, outside of individual efforts or the odd 3 way passing play between Gaudreau, Monahan, and Ferland.

That is with a much younger team. Suggesting that the team (in terms of point production) has improved is a long stretch.

Not to mention that Hartley won more playoff rounds with that rebuilding team than Gulutzan won playoff games with a substantially better roster.

In fairness, missing key players like Tkachuk, Brodie, Smith, Hamonic, Gaudreau, Monahan (playing through injury), and Ferland is going to affect the eye test. The Flames were pretty lucky in the first half of the season - aside from Versteeg and Jagr they were pretty unscathed. Then, starting with Smith, some really key injuries happened. I'd also suggest that Frolik never looked the same after his injury.

If it happens, in light of Fridays events, I would guess between Wednesday and Friday at the earliest.

It would be interesting to see how things would work out for Hamilton if Sutter was brought back to coach. In L.A., Doughty saw a big decline in his points while under Sutter's tutelage (he's magically way up there in points again). Sutter cut him way back on 5 v 5 minutes. He didn't trust him defensively in many situations. He held Doughty accountable for his defensive lapses and I'm sure it ultimately made Doughty a better, more well-rounded Dman.
Could be an interesting exercise to go through for Dougie.

There are conflicting reports, but I would guess that since there has been no mention of his contract status in the media amid a lot of discussion of his status and future that he is probably signed for another year.

Francis confirmed this as well. Lots of what he says I take with a grain of salt but I can see him being right about that. Also noted he was one of the lowest paid coaches in the NHL. I also believe that.

Hopefully it is valued like the year left that Keenan and Hartley had (off you go!) and not like Brent Sutter’s final year (riding out the term with an obvious garbage coach)

Actually, to be more fair, you should look at the complete roster.
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/l...000432016.html
Lots of injuries. Lots of less inexperienced personnel on the roster. Especially telling is looking at the D. Hartley had to cycle between 13 D. Gulutzan had a mostly healthy D corps and only had to use 8 - until Andersson came up, only Kulak would be considered inexperienced.

Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone
Bartkowski - Andersson

That's it. That's pretty damn good.

Compare it to this:

Giordano - Brodie
Russell - Hamilton
Engelland - Wideman
Smid - Jokipakka
Kulak - Nakladal
Wotherspoon - Kylington
Sieloff

Sure, Russell was traded and Jokipakka came in, but that is still trying to fit a guy into the existing system. That's a lot of injuries. That's during the "Wideman incident", and Wideman's wheels completely fell off. Fitting Hamilton - who was awful for the first half of the season.

All the while this continuous 'defense in flux' was backstopped by craptastic goaltending.

You also put into parenthesis Colborne's stats. The same Colborne that went on to get 8 points in Colorado the following season, and got demoted before the season started but only managed to play 13 AHL games and no NHL games this season. I would say Hartley got the most out of him, no?

Also, that forward lineup is not as strong as Hartley has had the luxury of icing. It is a much worse roster, even when comparing the goaltending between the two coaches.

Yeah, that season sucked for the Flames, but it was a worse roster without a doubt. The previous year Hartley took the Flames to the 2nd round of the playoffs, was awarded the Jack Adams, but still got fired for a poor season (and that's fine). Gulutzan has been a downgrade, especially when directly comparing rosters. If Hartley got fired, I suspect Gulutzan is on his way out too then.
